Abstract
By an act passed on 1835 August 1 the sixty-four slaves, whose names appear on the list, were mortgaged to the Citizens' Bank. [Many of the persons on the list appear to have been the slaves that the widow of Antonio Ducros purchased from Casimir Lacoste. See document dated 1835 June 26.] The names are written in ink. Penciled in by some are the notations "mort(e)" or "vendu(e)" or "Lacoste."

Louisiana Attorney General, 1815-1817; 1821-1824; and 1832-1841 * Louisiana Secretary of State, 1817-1821 * Louisiana Legislature, 1823-1824 * Born in La Rochelle, France at the prelude to the French Revolution, 1777 * Employed at French law firm at age 13 * Joined the French Navy, was captured by the English and was taken to Spain where he acquired knowledge of civil law in both the Spanish and English languages * Returned to Paris in 1799 where he began to voice anti-Bonaparte sentiments * Expelled from France and arrived in New Orleans in 1801 * Spoke French, English and Spanish fluently and was a great orator * Represented Creoles who spoke only French and became very popular * Admitted to the bar in 1805 * Appears as counsel in the second and third cases reported in the first volume of Martin's Reports * Contributed to the compilation of A Digest of the Civil Laws Now in Force in the Territory of Orleans, 1808 , as he was well versed in both Spanish civil law and the Code Napoleon * Began a law practice with Edward Livingston * Won a judicial decision along with the help of Livingston, Moreau-Lislet and Derbigny, which ensured the recognition of Roman civil law in Louisiana * Married Judge Felix Grima's sister Aimée and they raised five children * Died of a fatal asthma attack at the age of 72 * Interred at St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 in New Orleans * Portrait attributed to Jean-Joseph Vaudechamp in portrait dedication article

Abstract
In this indenture, Jean Baptiste Normand Jr. (17 years of age) is sponsored by his father, Jean Baptiste Normand (described as a free man of color), as an apprentice to Muro & Azare (described as free men of color) to learn to be a joiner. In French.

Indentures in which at least one party was a free person of color were selected from among all of the indentures available. This identification was made either by the designation of an individual as a free person of color in the record or when a phenotypical description like "quadroon," "mulatto," or "Negro" was given and there was no information to indicate the person was enslaved.
