In this indenture, Jean Baptiste Chauvin (described as a free boy of color of about 17 years of age) is sponsored by his mother, Arsene Bonseigneur (described as a free woman of color), as an apprentice to Colberton Will to learn to be a plasterer.

Indentures in which at least one party was a free person of color were selected from among all of the indentures available. This identification was made either by the designation of an individual as a free person of color in the record or when a phenotypical description like "quadroon," "mulatto," or "Negro" was given and there was no information to indicate the person was enslaved.
