Abstract
Voice of the people, January, 1936 front page illustrated with cartoon of Robert Maestri. Documents the political campaign associated with the first state election after Huey Long's death, which was held on Jan. 21st, 1936. The Long successors battled to maintain political control with their Leche-Allen-(Earl) Long ticket. The opposing ticket was made up of Dear-Sandlin-Moss and identified themselves as the Home Rule ticket which promised to return "local self-government" back to the people. The Voice of the People supported the Home Rule ticket. This issue contains articles criticizing Robert Maestri (who would soon become the Mayor of New Orleans) and Earl Long, who were Long supporters and considered part of the "Huey Long political machine."

Abstract
Lesson Abstract: This lesson involves students in a case study investigation into the United States' 1803 purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France. Students use primary and secondary resources to investigate the domestic and international motivations that facilitated the purchase, the constitutional and political issues surrounding Jefferson's decision, and the immediate and long-term impact this land exchange had on the development of the United States. Students work in collaborative groups and assume investigative roles as they examine historical maps and documents to complete their role-specific tasks. The collaborative lesson consists of 2 tiers: 1) a fact gathering investigation during which all students maintain a research journal detailing the events surrounding the purchase and the men involved in the negotiations, and 2) an analytic examination of the Purchase-related facts and individuals during which students complete role-specific tasks and generate a variety of authentic products. Completed group tasks include individual research journals, a map archive and timeline, a biographical dictionary, a collection of newspaper articles, a position statement involving one nation's perspective of the Louisiana Purchase, and a debate concerning the constitutionality of the Purchase. The lesson culminates with each student completing a DBQ, document based essay question.
