Abstract: The conveyance, dated May 22, 1793, negotiates use of land in Natchez ceded to Andrés Gil, practitioner at the Natchez royal hospital. In the document, Gil addresses Manuel Gayoso de Lemos, District Governor of Natchez (West Florida), and states his plans to build a house on No. 2 of Square No. 2. Written in the left margin on the same date is Gayoso de Lemos' response, granting the concession under the condition that a house be built on it within one year. The district governor also states that Guillermo Dunbar will mark out the land.

On the third page, Dunbar certifies on June 2, 1793 in Natchez that he has measured No. 2 of Square 2 and marked its boundaries with cypress pickets and he gives the measurements.

On January 7, 1795, Gayoso de Lemos notes at the end of the document that Gil has met the conditions of the concession and, thereby, has full rights to the land in question. Charles Vidal's signature is barely visible below Gayoso de Lemos’.

Inside the document are three notes in English, one of which is scratched out.

William Johnson, a free man of color and barber of Natchez, Mississippi, later owned the lot that belonged to Andrés Gil. In Spanish.

Abstract: Twelve documents related to free persons of color in Louisiana, dating from colonial times through reconstruction. The papers include an agreement by Rodulfo Dueros to pay the rent of Francisco Dorville, described as a free mulatto, in return for Dorville's construction of a sidewalk; the lease of a city-owned house given to James Johnson, a free man of color; and a recognizance or peace bond against Gabriel Jeanot, a free man of color. Also included are four promise-to-pay notes by the City of New Orleans to three free persons of color: Victor, Janette Doqueminy, and Marie Jeanne Villamil (the latter two were landowners). Two reports by a New Orleans doctor indicate the number of persons under his care, including one mentioning the death of a mulatto man of Captain Pemberton's. Also present are the printed copy of the Louisiana Constitutional Convention's Emancipation Report and two labor agreements between Louisiana planters and freedmen. In Spanish, French, and English.

Abstract: [The outbreak of war between France and Spain in 1793 posed a defense problem for the Governor of Louisiana, the Baron de Carondelet. The Girondist government had sent "Citizen" Edmond Genêt to the United States to work to wrest Louisiana and the Floridas from Spain. His intrigues resulted in the planning of an attack upon the Louisiana colony by Americans, who were to come down from the Ohio River Valley. At the same time, in the fall of 1793 rumors indicated the strong possibility that a naval expedition would enter the mouth of the Mississippi, sail up the river, and seize New Orleans. These instructions, issued by Carondelet and marked "Highly Confidential," listed precautionary and protective measures to be followed in the event of an invasion, but the threatened attack never took place.] Carondelet informed Colonel Bouligny that he (Carondelet) had to go to Plaquemines, but that he was keeping the trip a secret. He would return by the 24th. Should Bouligny receive news of the enemy's arrival at La Balize, he was to carry out the following instructions: order the detachments at Natchez, Baton Rouge, and Gálveztown, and the two galleys, to proceed to English Turn; reinforce Fort San Carlos with fifty men; request a detachment to be sent from the German Coast Regiment and dispatch it to English Turn to serve under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Carlos de Grand-Pre; remove the gunpowder from the commercial warehouse and distribute it at Forts San Fernando and San Juan; bivouac the town militia in the Charity Hospital; leave the cannon balls at Fort San Carlos until after the enemy had passed English Turn; enclose the residence of [Gilbert Antoine de Saint] Maxent with a moat and parapet, employing the City Regiment and the Negroes of the town; burn the houses of Andrés Almonestér y Roxas and others downriver from Fort San Carlos should the enemy get past Plaquemines; send the Creek chiefs back to Pensacola happy; order José Méndez to make 100,000 cartridges; instruct José Hevia to complete the repair of the galleys as soon as possible. If the enemy approached by way of the Chef Menteur pass, it would be necessary to block the roads with trees and trenches and to surround the area with troops. The regiment of veterans, however, should under no circumstance be moved from its post at the main cannon in the square, where they were to assist in the protection of Fort San Carlos, through which aid could reach the city.

Abstract: Carlos Trudeau, Royal Surveyor for the Province of Louisiana, certified that on 1792 March 17 he surveyed and established the boundaries for two tracts of land, situated on either side of the Bayou San Bernardo, district of the same name, for the claimant Juan Gusman. The property was bounded by lands belonging to Antonio De Armas and to Carlos [Macles?]. Gusman had purchased rights to one of the tracts from an earlier claimant, Carlos Giroir.

Abstract: Pedro Rousseau, Captain in the Royal Army and Commander of a Squadron of galleys on the Mississippi River, had embarked on the war vessel La Flecha on special assignment for His Majesty. Colonel Manuel Gayoso de Lemos, Civil and Military Governor of the Natchez post, ordered commandants of all other posts along the entire extension of the river to render any assistance Rousseau should need or be responsible for whatever delay their failure to obey might cause.

He relates preparations to send his oldest son to France and reiterates his wife's fear of crossing the ocean, a subject discussed in previous letters. In the postscript, the addresser extends his regards to 'Le penaillon.'

Abstract: Armand Allard Duplantier, New Orleans, writes his brother, Guy Allard Duplantier, Voiron, France, to say that his son and a shipment of indigo will not be sailing to France as planned. He comments on the war, on what is going on in France and in Louisiana, and on the reunification of the two places. He suggests mailing through Bordeaux, care of Lille Sarpy, who is associated with 'Les frères Cambon et Compagnie' or Barrière, who has dealings with 'Henry et Gros, Négociants.' Noting that Mme. Guimard has sent Messrs. Faure, Gariot, and 'Blan chirugien' (Blanc) her procuration in Claude Trénonay's succession, Duplantier speaks unfavorably of both Blanc and his late uncle Claude Trénonay. He reveals knowing that the latter tried to paint a bad picture of Duplantier to their relatives. The writer asserts that whereas Trénonay made himself generally detested in Louisiana, Duplantier has won the respect and friendship of honest colonists. The addresser alludes to a letter that his wife, Augustine, wrote to his mother that gives more of an idea of Trénonay's character. Duplantier extends his regards to 'la petite [Barbeto? Baubeto?] mentioned in the postscript of his March 18, 1781, letter and to Eduvige. He describes his eldest son's rough personality and appearance, offering Gariot's remark that the boy resembles Eduvige. Duplantier jokes that if he did not know that 'Penaillon' was such a good patriot, he would have him come to Louisiana, where the Capuchins play an important role. He sends his best to 'Tante Allard' in the postscript.

Abstract: Armand Allard Duplantier, New Orleans, addresses his father, Joseph Allard Duplantier, recounting that he had gone to New Orleans with his son and the indigo from his uncle's succession, only to find that war had halted ships' sailing to France. He states that he has stored the indigo in the city and that communication will likely pass through New England or Spain. He reports that relatives have written James Mather ('Matter') and Julien Poydras concerning Claude Trénonay's succession. Duplantier relates that Americans have been allowed to conduct business in Louisiana. He says that André Gariot was going to accompany the writer's son to France and that 'Plauton' is mad over the war's preventing the journey. In the postscript, Duplantier asks to be remembered to 'my old pastor the Abbé Perrin.'
