Abstract: The oversize folder contains indentures conveying land, dating from 1802-1836, and a petition for the emancipation of Harriet Battles and her child, Ann Battles, by Gabriel Tichenor in the State of Mississippi, dated May 18, 1822-November 3, 1824.

An indenture, dated March 26, 1802, conveys land in Adams County, Mississippi from St. James Beauvais, Thomas Prather, and James Smiley to Joseph Newman. The document states that Thomas Prather and James Smiley are from the State of Kentucky.

The second indenture, dated May 1829, conveys a lot of land in the city of Natchez from Gabriel Tichenor and his wife Elizabeth Tichenor to Harriet Battles, a free person of color and former enslaved person of Gabriel Tichenor.

The third indenture, dated March 29, 1836, conveys a property on State Street in the city of Natchez from Peter M. Lapice to Joseph F. Lapice.
The fourth indenture in the folder conveys a lot of land in the city of Natchez to William Johnson, a free man of color, on November 20, 1826.

The petition for the emancipation of Harriet and Ann Battles represents Gabriel Tichenor's attempts to free Harriet Battles and her daughter before moving the mother and daughter to Cincinnati, where both were granted freedom under Ohio state law.

Abstract: Governor Salcedo issued a passport granting free passage to Juan Luis Brents, a Frenchman, who was sailing to New York on the Eliza. Brents, as required, presented his baggage at the Revenue Office where Hoa certified his compliance. On May 25, Pedro Favrot signed the passport when the vessel passed Fort Saint Philip.

Abstract: Governor Salcedo informed María Luisa Senechal, widow of Colonel Francisco Bouligny, that the King had approved the pension granted to her and her minor son, Luis, by the Military Pension Office (Monte Pío Militar). She was to receive 500 pesos per year so long as she did not remarry and she remained in charge of the education and upbringing of the boy, until he reached the age of twenty-four or took a salaried position.

Abstract: Diego Arnandez, resident of the Iberville district, stated that he did not have sufficient land to endow his children and petitioned the Governor to grant him title to a parcel of land measuring ten arpents frontage and forty arpents depth, situated in the Royal lands on the right bank of the Mississippi above Bayou Plaquemine. Arnandez requested that the ten arpents be measured from the southern boundary line, which was adjacent to the property of Amant Hebert. There follow a number of endorsements made by various government officials. On 1799 January 29 Francisco Rivas, [Commandant of the Iberville district], transmitted the petition to the Governor with the certification that the land was unclaimed and that no impediment to granting title existed. On 1802 April 1, the [Intendant] Juan Ventura Morales referred the matter to the Comptroller General [of the Royal Treasury in New Orleans], Gilberto Leonard, who on 1802 May 18 gave his consent that the grant be made, subject to a proper survey conducted by the Surveyor General. Morales, before Carlos Ximenes, [Secretary of the Intendancy], on May 19 added his authorization. Later, Manuel Serrano, [Assesor of the Intendancy], requested that the Commandant of the Royal Treasury ascertain the ages of the applicant's children.

Abstract: Armand Allard Duplantier, New Orleans, writes his brother, Guy Allard Duplantier, Voiron, France. He speaks of smallpox in Louisiana, inoculation against it, and the disease's effect on slave sales. He continues to track the progress in Claude Trénonay's succession and gives information on indigo, cotton, and sugar in Louisiana. Duplantier relates the economic effect of Louisiana's retrocession to France as well as his plans to send his son Guy to Europe. The writer repeats his interest in property at Falque and Tullins ('Tulin'), France. He sends his regards to Eduvige, his aunts Allard and Guimard, Madame Faure, the 'Penaillon,' Fr. Perrin, and the recipient's wife and child. In the margin, Duplantier adds that Poignand [Poignaud?] has returned to Louisiana and has expressed his regrets at not having been able to see the recipient while in France.

Abstract: John Leslie, London correspondent for Panton, Leslie and Company, wrote to John Forbes, a partner in the firm, who was at the time most likely in Pensacola or Mobile. Leslie repeated rumors that he heard circulating in London about the results of Spain's transfer of the Louisiana colony back to France - the probable boundaries, new commercial restrictions on non-French vessels at the port of New Orleans, and the imposition of a government monopoly on the Indian trade, in which Panton, Leslie and Company engaged. Leslie, also mentioned news of General Leclerc in Santo Domingo and the bankruptcy of the Charleston office of the London firm of Ed. Gairdner and Company at a loss of more than $500,000.

Included are letters by Augustin Malet and his daughter Marie Therese Malet, both free people of color, regarding the sale of their property. Also present are letters from affiliates of the American Colonization Society (John Hanson, H. Teager, and G. Schmidt) recording McDonogh's collaboration with the group. Some documents are written in French.

Abstract: Armand Allard Duplantier, announces to his sister, Eduvige Allard Duplantier, Voiron, France, that he is sending his sons Armand (age 17) and Guy to France with Dr. Giovellina. He states that he has inoculated Guy as well as his daughter against smallpox. Duplantier repeatedly refers to his brother, Guy, as 'Allard.' He relates the effect that the uncertainty of the colony's future governance is having on Louisiana. The addresser states that he is still undecided about remarrying. In a postscript, he sends his regards to the 'Penaillon,' inquiring about the latter and asking, 'Is he still lazy like a monk?'

The document also bears the signature of Manuel de Salcedo.
