Abstract
Legal and financial papers of the Johnson family for the years 1840-1848 include slave bills of sale, deeds of emancipation, freedom papers, deeds of conveyance, receipts, and other legal and financial documents. The papers are chiefly those of William Johnson, his mother-in-law, Harriet Battles, and Harriet's mother, Jane Bush (also seen as ""Jenny Bush""), all free persons of color.

Two documents relate to the emancipation of Julia Ann and her two daughters, Laura and Margaret. A slave bill of sale, dated April 29, 1840, confers ownership of Julia Ann, Laura, and Margaret from Miles Kelly to Harriet Battles. The second document, dated June 11, 1840, is a deed of emancipation freeing Julia Ann, Laura, and Margaret through the power of attorney of Harriet's mother, Jane Bush. A certification of Jane Bush's power of attorney on behalf of Harriet Battles, dated June 21, 1842, is also present.

Other documents related to Jane Bush include a freedom paper, dated June 11, 1840, certifying that Jane has lived as a free woman for more than twenty year's time and a freedom paper for Jane Bush signed in Indiana on June 21, 1842.

Documents related to Harriet Battles include: a freedom paper, dated June 26, 1840, signed by Horace Gridley; a receipt for Harriet's passage from Louisville, Kentucky to Cincinnati, Ohio, dated May 15, 1843; two receipts; and a city tax receipt dated September 23, 1842.

Papers of William Johnson include: a receipt for the sale of an enslaved man named Jim, dated February 29, 1844; a deed of conveyance from Franklin Beaumont to William Johnson for the Bellevue property, dated 1840; a notice, dated February 23, 1842, to Major Henry Chotard to pay William Johnson tuition due to him for the education of his sons; an indenture between Eliza Cochran and William Johnson, dated March 27, 1844; a license to William Johnson for keeping a dog within the city limits, dated May 3, 1844; and various tax receipts for Johnson's taxable properties and enslaved persons.

Abstract
The first volume of the Register of Free Colored Persons Entitled to Remain in the State was produced by the New Orleans Mayor's Office between 1840 and 1856. Free people of color who were not born in the City of New Orleans, or who were born in the Parish of Orleans and were emancipated after birth, were required to register with the Mayor's Office as free people of color.

The register as a whole is comprised of four volumes created between the years 1840-1864. The roster lists the individual's name, sex, color, age, occupation, place of birth (parish or county, state, country), date of arrival (this section is blank in the majority of entries), additional remarks, and the date that the information was recorded. Information found in the remarks column identifies the name of the emancipator or the name of the person who verified a free person of color's free status by witnessing or notarizing the act of emancipation.

The roster is arranged in chronological groups for the years 1840-1856. The names are recorded alphabetically by the first letter of the last name, or as in some cases, the first letter of the only given name.

Note that this list is an index to a transcription of the register, published by Le Comité des Archives de la Louisiane. Page numbers given in the index refer to the published transcription and not to the manuscript register.

Volume 1 is in French and English.

Abstract
At the order of Parish Judge François Dugué and in conformity with the Act of the Legislature of 1840 March 27, the mortgage records of Jefferson Parish, comprising twelve volumes, were delivered by the office of the Clerk of Court to the Recorder of Mortgages, Louis Bouligny. There followed a list and detailed description of the books transferred.

Abstract
Two-door armoire or cabinet surmounted by large, stepped projecting flat cornice, all veneered with flame grain mahogany. Interior divided into two compartments: proper right with shelves, proper left for hanging. Four removable shelves of pine faced with mahogany rest on unidentified tropical hardwood supports screwed into case divider and side of case (same wood used for cornice glue blocks). Simple band of veneer around case bottom with small quarter round strip molding applied below (nailed). Cornice in two sections: upper projecting section flat with slightly beveled underside. Next section beneath repeats upper format, all atop case joined by small ogee molding. Doors mortised and tenoned to create frame in which floats veneered center panel. Solid mahogany sides with pine case bottom with mahogany rails on three sides. Back made of four pine boards with grain laid vertically with tongue at top and bottom; tongue slides into groove in case bottom; cornice grooved to fit over tongue at top of boards. Rear of boards have plane marks and are slightly beveled on sides. Cornice with unidentified tropical hardwood blocks joined to case sides by iron rod through pine case side glue blocks. Bottom of case secured in same manner of glue blocks and iron rods. Case sits on urn-like feet carved from solid blocks glued. Rear feet are inverted balusters on turned balls, stained, doweled into case. Hinges bolstered by additional glue blocks on inner faces of case sides.

Abstract
In this letter, W.S. Holabird writes that he has received Lewis Tappan's letter from September 24. He mentions that when he wrote to him on September 5, he had no knowledge of Tappan having ever received "any instructions on the subject named and was confident that [he] had received none." After receiving Tappan's letter of September 9, referring to a communication from the Secretary of State to Holabird from April 30, Holabird examined the papers in his office and found an unopened letter sent to him at Litchfield. By return mail Holabird wrote to Tappan and Roger S. Baldwin that he was "authorized to admit the authenticity of the Spanish documents."
