Abstract
Legal and financial papers of the Johnson family for the years 1850-1854 include receipts for goods and services, tax receipts, promissory notes, construction specifications, and legal documents related to the trials of Baylor Winn, the free man of color accused of and tried for William Johnson's murder in 1851. Many of the financial papers document the settlement of William Johnson's debts following his death, with the bulk of these materials addressed to the Estate of William Johnson.

Three documents notarized by court officials of King William County, Va., certify that members of the Winn family are all descended from free people of color of King William County, Va., dating back to 1802. These documents include: a ""List of Free Negroes over 12 Years Old in King William County, Va,"" dated March 26, 1852; a certification of the Winn family's residence in King William County, Va., dated March 25, 1852; and a certification of Washington Winn's status as a free negro, dated March 24, 1852. A survey of September 9, 1850, which was conducted in the property dispute case between William Johnson and Benjamin Wade and Baylor Winn, is also present. These materials were probably gathered by members of the Johnson family to be used as evidence in the case against Baylor Winn.

The folder contains two deeds: a land conveyance from Robert Mott and Thomas Lee to William Johnson, dated December 19, 1849, and a deed certifying that James Gregory is the rightful owner of a property in Adams County, dated January 29, 1850.

Receipts to the Estate of William Johnson include a receipt for funerary costs, tax receipts, and receipts of repayment to persons William Johnson was indebted to.

Several documents of Ann Battles Johnson written in 1854 detail the construction of a building on Main Street in Natchez. These documents include construction specifications, a receipt for purchase of the building, and various other receipts for construction costs.

Abstract
Legal and financial papers of the Johnson family for the years 1854-1859 include receipts and invoices for goods and services, receipts for rent, and tax receipts of Ann Battles Johnson, following the 1851 death of her husband William Johnson, a free man of color. Many of the tax receipts are for money owed from the estate of William Johnson.

Receipts of Ann Battles Johnson include receipts for furniture, the hire of a horse, purchase of coal, a gold ring, dentistry, fabric, and other goods. Included is a slave bill of sale for an enslaved man named ""Clifton,"" sold to Ann Battles Johnson by Catharine and John Brumley.

Abstract
Primarily receipts, promissory notes, and other financial documents of Baptiste Meullion. Receipts are for Martin Duralde’s drafting of Baptiste Meullion’s marriage contract with Marie Célèste Suzanne Donato (Bello), donations to the Saint Landry Catholic Church (Opelousas, La.), taxes, freight on luxury goods, newspaper postage, medical care for an enslaved person, legal services, expenses and disbursements from his handling of the succession of Marie-Pouponne Taillefer, expenses from processing his 1830 sugar crop, and for payment on a mortgage to purchase the enslaved man Marcel from Widow Stelly, the wife of Robin (1820, see #5). Another receipt (1830) also relates to his purchase of the enslaved man Marcel, but this time the seller is named as the estate of Marie Thérèse "Berthelotte," wife of Dr. Robin. In many of these transactions, Jean Miramond is acting on behalf of Meullion, perhaps as his agent or partner, and the unit of currency continues to be denoted as "piastres"and not dollars in most exchanges, even after Louisiana became a territory of the United States in 1803. Promissory notes are with Valérien Allain, J. Miramond, and Messrs. Smith and Brown. Also present is a receipt from Curé E. Rousselon’s for payment received from Antoine Donat Meuillon for the burial of Baptiste Meullion, who died February 17, 1840, financial documents for the Widow of François Meullion, and a receipt for Widow Fédrich Blassy accounts with Bellazaire Meullion. Documents in French and English.

U.S. Senator from Louisiana, 1855-1861 * Louisiana Legislature, 1842-1844 * Member of Louisiana Constitutional Convention of 1844 * Born in what is now the Virgin Islands in 1811 and immigrated with parents to Savannah, Georgia, in 1816 * After teaching school and studying law, he was admitted to the Louisiana bar in 1832 * Elected to the lower house of the state legislature and served from 1842 to 1844 * Member of the Louisiana Constitutional Convention of 1844 to draft Louisiana's second constitution, approved in 1845 * In 1853 elected as a Whig to the United States Senate, and was reelected as a Democrat in 1859 * Resigned his Senate seat on February 4, 1861, after Louisiana seceded from the Union * Served as Confederacy's first attorney general, then as Secretary of War in the Jefferson Davis Cabinet, and finally as Secretary of State until the close of the war * Although he evacuated Richmond with Davis's official party in April 1865, he separated from the group and eventually made his way to the Bahamas, Cuba, and finally to Great Britain in 1865 * Studied English law at Lincoln's Inn, London, was admitted to the bar in that city in 1866, and practiced law there * Received the appointment of Queen's counsel in 1872 * Retired in 1883 from active practice and public life and moved to Paris, France * Died there May 6, 1884 * Interred in Pere la Chaise Cemetery
