Abstract
The folder includes baptismal records for eight of the ten children of Ann Battles Johnson and William Johnson, free people of color: Anna, Katherine, Richard, Byron, Eugenia, Alice, Josephine, and Clarence. Each baptismal record lists the names of each child's godparents.

Baptismal records of the year 1842 are for Anna, Richard, and Byron, who were baptized in the St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans. These certificates were drawn from the Third Book, which contained the baptisms of free persons of color.

The remaining five baptismal records are for Alice, Katherine, Eugenia, Josephine, and Clarence, who were baptized in 1856, also in the St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans.

The five baptismal records dated 1856 are written in French.

Abstract
The first volume of the Register of Free Colored Persons Entitled to Remain in the State was produced by the New Orleans Mayor's Office between 1840 and 1856. Free people of color who were not born in the City of New Orleans, or who were born in the Parish of Orleans and were emancipated after birth, were required to register with the Mayor's Office as free people of color.

The register as a whole is comprised of four volumes created between the years 1840-1864. The roster lists the individual's name, sex, color, age, occupation, place of birth (parish or county, state, country), date of arrival (this section is blank in the majority of entries), additional remarks, and the date that the information was recorded. Information found in the remarks column identifies the name of the emancipator or the name of the person who verified a free person of color's free status by witnessing or notarizing the act of emancipation.

The roster is arranged in chronological groups for the years 1840-1856. The names are recorded alphabetically by the first letter of the last name, or as in some cases, the first letter of the only given name.

A list of names appearing in the register is available online at www.lecomite.org/indexes/FPOCIndex.txt. Note that this list is an index to a transcription of the register, published by Le Comité des Archives de la Louisiane. Page numbers given in the index refer to the published transcription and not to the manuscript register.

Volume 1 is in French and English.

Abstract

Abstract
The manuscript, which has the heading indicated in the caption above, quoted the section of the will of John David Fink in which he delegated his estate (after payment of certain legacies) for the establishment of the Fink Asylum. Following the quote are articles of incorporation that may have been submitted to the Louisiana Legislature for its consideration. This last part is in rough form with several crossovers and changes of wording.

Abstract
Primarily financial and legal documents of Joseph Perot, a free man of color, and Louis Fort. Of note is a true copy of an act of manumission by Louis Fort for a woman (described as a mulatto) named Angélique (1819), and, a document for the sale of a mortgage and a 20-year-old enslaved man named Joe to Joseph Perot by Aimee Barborousse Pantaléon, widow of Isidore Pantaléon (1840).

Legal contracts include a land sale contract between Louis Fort and John Baptiste Buard, the last will and testament of Louis Fort (1823), and a land grant for land formally owned by Louis Fort by the widow of the late Jean Baptiste Buard to Marie Rosalie Perot, Pierre Edmond, and Louis Onesime (1840).

Financial documents include bills for dry goods, a promissory note by Joseph Perot for the cost of gun repair (1848), and a statement of account from Dupleix Brothers to Madeleine, a free woman of color (dated 1853-1855). Other members of the Perot family, Buard family, and the Pelagie family are also represented. All but five documents are in French.
