Abstract
Legal and financial papers of the Johnson family for the years 1860-1866 are comprised of receipts for goods and services and other legal and financial documents of Ann Battles Johnson and her sons Byron Johnson and William Johnson Jr., following the 1851 death of William T. Johnson. The papers document the Johnson family's business life and legal dealings during the Civil War and the early Reconstruction Era.

Items of note include: an amnesty oath for Byron Johnson (dated July 26, 1865); Ann Battles Johnson's Oath of Allegiance to the United States; two passports from 1862 for Jim, an enslaved man; a certificate for military enrollment for Byron Johnson (dated February 4, 1865); a certificate of military exemption for Richard M. Johnson (dated February 5, 1865); a certificate of membership for the 1st Battalion E. M. Colored for William Johnson Jr. (dated March 13, 1865), and his medical certification for military service exemption (dated March 14, 1865); and William Johnson Jr.'s receipt for a barber shop license (dated June 6, 1865). A receipt, dated November 27, 1866, to Anna Johnson for legal services paid in the administration of her mother Ann Battles Johnson's estate is also represented.

Abstract
Drawn by Samuel Lockett, this is the only known view of the Louisiana State Seminary of Learning’s seventy-two-room building and grounds. Located near Pineville in Rapides Parish on 438 acres, the Official Register of the Officers and Cadets (1866) said “the Seminary building was erected at great cost, and is one of the largest and finest college edifices in the South.” It had 72 rooms and was also one of the largest buildings in the South to survive the Civil War intact. On the morning of October 15, 1869, the building burned to the ground.

Abstract
The third volume of the Register of Free Colored Persons Entitled to Remain in the State was produced by the New Orleans Mayor's Office between 1859 and 1861. Free people of color who were not born in the City of New Orleans, or who were born in the Parish of Orleans and were emancipated after birth, were required to register with the Mayor's Office as free people of color.

The register as a whole is comprised of four volumes created between the years 1840-1864. The roster lists the individual's name, sex, color, age, occupation, place of birth (parish or county, state, country), date of arrival (this section is blank in the majority of entries), additional remarks, and the date that the information was recorded. Information found in the remarks column identifies either the name of the emancipator or the name of the person who verified a free person of color's free status by witnessing or notarizing the act of emancipation. Volume 3 is in English.

The roster is arranged in chronological groups for the years 1859-1861. The names are recorded alphabetically by the first letter of the last name, or as in some cases, the first letter of the only given name. A list of names appearing in the register is available online at www.lecomite.org/indexes/FPOCIndex.txt. Note that this list is an index to a transcription of the register, published by Le Comité des Archives de la Louisiane. The page numbers given in the index refer to the published transcription and not to the manuscript register.

Abstract

Abstract
By Act of Congress of 1855 March 3, which granted bounty land to officers and soldiers in the military service of the United States, the President certified a grant of land to Adelaide Kernion, widow of J.J.H. Kernion, Private, Captain Dannoy's [Daunoy's?] Company, Louisiana Militia, War of 1812. The tract was situated near Monroe, Louisiana, and encompassed 160.30 acres.

Abstract
The Committee's Report accompanied House Bill Number 583. The report gave the history of the Dauterive claim and of court decisions in suits seeking confirmation of title. The committee concluded that the claim should be confirmed, reported a bill for that purpose (Number 583), and recommended its passage.

Abstract
Before the Notary Public Adolphe Boudousquié, New Orleans, appeared A. Cyprien Trémoulet, acting for the three Jourdans, residents of Saint James Parish. Also present was James D. Denegre, President of the Citizens' Bank, acting in accordance with the resolution passed by the bank directors at their December 10th meeting. Those present declared that the Jourdans were each owners of an undivided third of the following: 1) a sugar plantation in Saint James Parish, and two other surveyed sections of land; 2) fifty-seven slaves (names and ages given); and 3) 464 shares of capital funds stock of the Citizen's Bank, payment for which was guaranteed, along with payment for a loan of $10,337.60, by a mortgage given in 1834 by Noël Jourdan.

Abstract
Before Notary Public Amedée Damas, Malhoit declared that he had drawn two promissory notes in the amount of $8,120 and $7,560, payable in favor of Jean Baptiste Aucoin and his wife Azelie Boudreau. To secure payment Malhoit gave Aucoin a mortgage on a sugar plantation, situated on Bayou Lafourche fourteen miles below Napoleonville, and the forty slaves (names and ages given) on the property.
