Abstract
In this indenture, Francois Millaud (described as a free child of color of about 13 years of age) is sponsored by his mother, Isabelle Arnaud (described as a free woman of color), as an apprentice to Joseph F. Valentin to learn to be a joiner. In French.

Indentures in which at least one party was a free person of color were selected from among all of the indentures available. This identification was made either by the designation of an individual as a free person of color in the record or when a phenotypical description like "quadroon," "mulatto," or "Negro" was given and there was no information to indicate the person was enslaved.

Includes legal documents regarding the purchase and ownership of enslaved persons, tutorship or guardianship of the Rousseau children after their mother's death, and statements of the separate and joint assets of Jean Rousseau and Jeanne Marie Mallet, both free people of color. Also included are Jean's registration of a property purchase on Bourbon St. and a power of attorney in which he grants his wife full authority to act on his behalf during his absence.
