Text, December 5, 1849. Awful Fire at Baton Rouge. Account of disastrous fire in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on November 24, 1849. The fire originated in the early morning and destroyed all the buildings to Lafayette street. All the stores destroyed are listed, many listed with the estimated insured amount.

Abstract
Text, date unknown, circa 1930s. Carencro and Points of Interest at a Greater Distance than 15 miles from Lafayette, Louisiana. The article describes Acadian farm dwellings, commercial cattle farms, country stores and their owners and historic furniture from a Carencro home tied to the Valenciennes Lace Factory. A history, description, listing of previous owners, history of the sale of slaves, participation in the Civil War and a cemetery of Twin Oaks plantation are discussed in detail as well.

Text, August 8, 1873. Lamp Lighters. Who They Are, How Much They Are Paid. Article describing the lamp lighters of New Orleans, Louisiana. Thirty-five men light and extinguish 3628 lamps, distributed over one hundred and forty miles of pipe as employees of the New Orleans Gaslight Company. Most men hold other day-jobs such as shop owners and tailors. As a class the lamplighters are sober and industrious. The article is divided into sections: How they live, Lamp lighting during the war, How lamp lighters have risen in life, The twenty year men, What it takes to be a lamp lighter, How they are paid and Particular and eccentric characters including the old bachelor, the annual spree man, the soap-less man, the gold man and the barefoot man.
