The Robert "Bob" Hicks Foundation

Islandora advanced search

The Robert “Bob” Hicks Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preserving and furthering the legacy of the Bogalusa and Washington Parish Civil Rights Movement. The foundation was started in 2013 by Barbara Hicks Collins, daughter of Bogalusa civil rights leaders Robert and Valeira Hicks, with the mission to create a museum and community cultural center in two historic houses that served as both loving family homes and bases of operation for the Bogalusa Civil Rights Movement and the Bogalusa chapter of the Deacons for Defense and Justice.

In the 1960s, Black men and women from our community rose up to fight against white supremacy, risking their lives to create a more equitable and just world for future generations. We believe that by remembering and celebrating our ancestors’ courage, we can empower our youth, families and citizens to recognize their own potential to continue the struggle and contribute to their own communities in extraordinary ways.

This digital archive of photos, documents, audio and video chronicling the Bogalusa and Washington Parish Civil Rights Movement and early Bogalusa history was created in partnership with the Tangipahoa African American Heritage Museum. This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Grant #MH-00-18-0036-18. The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation's libraries and museums. We advance, support, and empower America’s museums, libraries, and related organizations through grantmaking, research, and policy development. Our vision is a nation where museums and libraries work together to transform the lives of individuals and communities. The views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this archive do not necessarily represent those of the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
