Condition
Overall fair condition. Substantial alterations. Proper right front peaked bracket is a replica of the left bracket and likely has replaced drop finials. Numerous drop finials and pegs have been reattached with glue (visible with blacklight). Front skirt tracery (trefoil) from proper left, immediately from stile, and the fourth from the left have been replaced and painted black and distressed. Side apron tracery are all a replacement that are similarly painted and distressed then nailed (with modern nails) to side rails. The carving quality is crude. Back board with fretwork is a later addition with a similar surface treatment. The saw marks are rough and inconsistent with the other elements of the stand. It is let into a channel on the top and bottom and secured with thin strips of wood. Please see Gothic Taste in America pg. 79 for a pre-restoration image of the piece. Mirror has lost some silvering.

Description
Gothic revival hall stand topped with central trilobate finial on a spire with crocketts. Three crocketts are applied along the outer length of each span of a pointed gothic arch that forms the crest rail of the stand. The arch contains a central pierced quatrefoil medallion. The crest is constructed using two pieces of oak. The two stiles take the form of spires and are also capped by crocketts. Blind tracery runs the length of each stile. Extending from each stile are additional arms with two turned pegs. The stiles suspend a small oak framed mirror with peaked gothic ornament. The upper section meets the marble surface with an additional symmetrical rail of tracery and two turned pegs. On both sides a small peaked bracket is applied that includes a turned peg designed to hold umbrellas in place. This feature is of a unified design with a similar applied pointed bracket that when viewed from a distance appear to complete a quatrefoil design. The flat surface is formed by a white marble slab with a thumbnail molded edge. The front stiles are fully pierced reflecting the gothic taste. The upper rail is similarly pierced. A strip of tracery is applied to the skirts on the sides. The front skirt tracery was cut from the rail. (please see condition) The back stiles have blind tracery flanked by strapwork brackets. The back is comprised of two sections of wood that have been cut into a fretwork design. The lower platform extends away from the case with demilune ends that have been cut to accommodate two cast iron shell drip pans. The apron of the platform has a pierced trefoil design. The stand rises on turned disk feet in front and plain feet in back.
