Abstract
This thesis, an investigation into the Russian Formalist concept of ostranenie, aims to connect that concept to the techniques of mid-century and contemporary women poets. To achieve that end, the paper undertakes an examination of ostranenie, or defamiliarization, as a device for engaging the reader on an emotional and sensory level and for re-awakening the desensitized individual to the full experience of lived embodiment. Because questions of unstable and evolving subjectivity are central concerns of poetry by Elizabeth Bishop and Louise Glück, work by those writers will be used to point at specific instances of successfully implemented ostranenie. Held by the Formalist critic Viktor Shklovskij to be the defining trait of poetic language, defamiliarization is presented here as certainly the defining trait of truly compelling poetry. Furthermore, enstrangement of language emerges in the poetry of women as a means for rendering, with the intensity of sensory immersion, the reality of gendered embodiment in a phallocentric society. As such, it is argued here to be a powerful social and ideological tool for the humanization of society and the subjective empowerment of marginalized individuals.

Abstract
The article profiles the challenges facing the Bogalusa civil rights movement and the Deacons for Defense and Justice in late 1965, following the events of “Bloody Wednesday” when police and sheriffs sicced unleashed dogs on a march of high school students, and later that night, stormed through Black businesses on Bogalusa’s 4th Street, “clubbing and beating scores,” and arresting over 250 people. It features rare and candid photos by Laurence Henry, a NOW! editor and civil rights activist who founded the Nonviolent Action Group at Howard University in 1960. The final page is an article by Detroit civil rights activist and author, James Boggs, “Malcolm X Inquiry Committee Stirs Harlem.” Some of the individuals featured in the photos are misidentified. The man holding the shotgun on page 9 is Sam Barnes, a member of the Bogalusa Deacons for Defense and Justice. Sam Barnes is shown again in the center of the photo at the bottom of page 10. To his right is activist R.T. Young, brother of Bogalusa Voters League President A.Z. Young. The man in the doorway on page 11 is attorney Nils Douglas. In the bottom photo on page 11, the woman second from right in the floral dress is Ozzie Mae Garrett.
