- This is an image of both the obverse and reverse of a bronze medal commemorating Walter Reed designed by Abram Belskie in 1973 for the Medallic Art Company [MAco 69-14-42]. Major Walter Reed, M.D., U.S. Army, (1851-1902) was a U.S. Army physician who in 1901 led the team that postulated and confirmed the theory that yellow fever is transmitted by the mosquito. The research work on yellow fever under Reed's leadership was largely responsible for stemming the mortality rates from this fever during the building of the Panama Canal. - This is an image of both the obverse and reverse of a bronze medal commemorating Antoine Laurent Lavoisier designed by Abram Belskie in 1971 for the Medallic Art Company [MAco 69-14-17]. Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier (1743-1794) was a French chemist. His is known for his influence on both the history of chemistry and biology and is known as the "father of modern chemistry". He changed chemistry from a qualitative to a quantitative science. Lavoisier is noted for his discovery of the role oxygen plays in combustion. He recognized and named oxygen (1778) and hydrogen (1783). He worked out how oxidation involved the consumption of oxygen and the release of energy. Later Sir Humphry Davy built upon the Lavoisier's experiments and researched respiratory physiology; measuring rates of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production. - This is an image of both the obverse and reverse of a bronze medal commemorating Louis Pasteur designed by Abram Belskie in 1972 for the Medallic Art Company [MAco 69-14-33]. "Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) is an exceptional scientist who opened a new era in medicine and biology. Starting from studies on crystals of by-products of wine fermentation, he first defined a distinct chemistry between dead and living matters. He then showed the role of living microbes in the fermentation and putrefaction processes. This brought him to challenge the two-millennium-old theory of spontaneous generation, using remarkably well-designed experiments. His observations on epidemics in silkworms allowed him to demonstrate the role of specific germs in infectious diseases. His discovery of the vaccine against fowl cholera can be considered as the birth of immunology. Finally, he became universally recognized through his famous vaccinations against anthrax and rabies." - Berche, P. Louis Pasteur, from crystals of life to vaccination.
