Abstract
"A $285,000 slander and libel suit was filed Friday afternoon in 22nd District court by three Bogalusa officials who recently won dismissal of a federal contempt of court motion in New Orleans. Commissioner of Safety Arnold Spiers, Police Chief Claxton Knight and Police Capt. Haynes "Twister" Wascom are asking $9,500 apiece from each of 10 defendants, on the grounds that the charges in the contempt motion were 'slanderous, libelous and untrue, malicious statements.'" Defendants in the suit were Jeffrey Horton, Robert Hicks, Fletcher Anderson, Michael Jones, Arron Cornelius Griffin, Charles Currier, Alcie Taylor, Henry Robinson, Charles Williams and Ralph Graves.

Left to right: Fletcher Anderson, Dr. Stanley Rapoport, Robert Hicks. Dr. Rapoport recalls: "That's the photo that means the most to me. You never see Hicks smile, he was burdened by all this pressure. It was 1967 and I had a free weekend so I drove back to Bogalusa. Since I'd been arrested at the bar 2 years earlier, Hicks said 'Let's go back to the bar.' So we went back, everybody was there, happy and smiling. Fletcher was there, they told me he'd been in jail. Charles Sims was also there with a gun across his chest, cursing away screaming he'd never talk to a white man again but I was okay."

Abstract
Federal civil rights lawsuit brought against the City of Bogalusa in 1975 by members of the Bogalusa Voters League, including Gayle Jenkins, Fletcher Anderson and Robert Hicks, for discrimination on the basis of race in allocation of municipal services and employment. The suit resulted in a consent decree under which the City would be monitored by the Department of the Treasury to ensure compliance.

"The Bogalusa Police Department arrested about 50 Negroes, mostly school absentees, this morning on charges of failing to move on and disturbing the peace, after a group planning a march of the Bogalusa School Board refused to follow alternate parade routes....Those arrested this morning on charges of contributing to the delinquency of school children were Fletcher Anderson, Sam Barnes, Mrs. Gayle Expose Jenkins, Charles Sims, Royan Burris and Robert Hicks. Those six and Mary Williams, Lemuel Barnes, R.T. Young and A.Z. Young were named on the subpoenas."

Abstract
Oral history with Robert Hicks, Grace Lee Berry and Johnny Berry (Hicks’ sister and brother-in-law.) They talk about the demonstration when Henry Austan shot a white man and how it was a “turnaround” for the Bogalusa Civil Rights Movement. They share memories of different run-ins with white racists during the Movement and what it was like to stand guard all night watching for the Klan. They discuss the night march to Franklinton, the “testing” of public accommodations and store boycotts, and the people who did and didn’t cross the picket lines. They talk about the night when Robert Hicks’ house was threatened when he was hosting white CORE workers, and Black men came to defend the house (“We’ll do our own protecting.”) They talk about how Andrew Moses resigned from the Bogalusa Civic and Voters League shortly afterwards and how they came to realize that the nascent Bogalusa civil rights movement “is going to be a long, drawn-out thing” and the decision to “go all the way.” Robert Hicks says the difference between the Voters League and the Bogalusa NAACP was that the Voters League wanted “freedom now or nothing,” while the NAACP’s strategy was gradual change. They recall the Bogalusa to Baton Rouge March and how women brought hat stickpins as weapons. They talk about the very first march in Bogalusa, led by students, and the first official march, led by James Farmer.
