Written on photo: Hodges Gardens, Louisiana's 1,400-acre "garden in the forest," located near Many, Louisiana, in the western central part of the state, offers a variety of botanical beauty year-round. Combining the rugged grace of an unspoiled wilderness with a skillful horticultural blending of flowers, shrubs and trees, the Gardens are on four dramatic levels, with views of the sparkling 225-acre lake on three sides. Also at the gardens are a wildlife refuge, an inn, swimming pools, golf and tennis.

Written on photo: Zemurray Gardens is an unusual garden in the forest, featuring a beautiful azalea trail which wraps around a large lake in the center of the gardens. Quaint bridges cross narrow spans of the water, and one leads to a tiny island in the lake. Most of the azaleas are the delicate looking wild variety which represent an astonishing variety of pink and red hues. The garden is extremely unusual in landscaping.

Hwy. 10 just off the Great River Road at St. Francisville Louisiana, is a magnificently resotred antebellum mansion built in 1835. The house, a harmonious combination of Louisiana, Georgian and Classic Architecture, contains beautiful period furnishings. It is situated at the end of a great avenue of oaks flanked by lush gardens of century old camillias and other shrubs and trees planted by the original mistress of the house. Rosedown is open daily except for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Located in downtown Shreveport Louisiana on the Red River Parkway. One of the few combined art and garden centers in the Southwest. Featuring art exhibits and programs. The south wing is a glass domed conservatory 100 feet in diameter featuring seasonal planting displays along with native specimens, temporate and semi-tropical plants.

B&W photo, circa 1968. Avery Island, Louisiana. Historical Marker for salt mines. Sign reads: First Rock Salt Mine. Salt evaporated from brine springs on Avery Island since 1791. On May 4, 1862, workmen enlarging these springs to produce more salt for the Confederacy hit solid salt at a depth of 16 feet. Mining operations, the first of this type in North America, were begun and continued until destruction of the salt works on April 17, 1863 by Union forces.
