Abstract: Armand Allard Duplantier, New Orleans, tells his sister, Eduvige Allard Duplantier, that he has received her letter, care of Bernard, announcing their brother's death. The addresser states his satisfaction over his sister's being with their sister-in-law, nephews, and niece. He relates that the sons from his first marriage, excepting Fergus, are in other locations, pursuing agriculture, and the children of his second marriage, four boys and a girl, are still with him, pursuing their education. He notes that his oldest daughter has finished her schooling in New Orleans and is helping her stepmother with the household. Duplantier relates that she resembles her paternal and not maternal family, and he expresses concerns over being able to marry her well in Louisiana. The writer states that he is neither happy nor well (especially because of some family troubles) and that he no longer deserves the nickname 'Gradouble.' He states that because of losses occasioned by a cotton disease, he had to sell his wife's properties to cover expenses. He comments on the local economy, refers to problems locals are having with government recognition of their land titles, and expresses the hope that Congress will resolve the latter. In a postscript, he sends his regards to Nanette Rocha and Mr. Colon.

Abstract: Partial extract from the index of claims filed in the Land Register's Office at St. Helena. When Louisiana became part of the United States, those who had received land grants from the Spanish had to prove they had been given the land by filing a claim with the local land office. The name of the grantee and the date, size, and "situation" or location of the land grant are given on this list. The extract was apparently made for surveyor Henry Waller in 1845 by John W. Gurley, and it records land grants made ca. 1786-1809. Gurley indicates in a note on the list that the claims of those listed were obtained by Rezin Bowie from the wife of Vincent S. Pintado, an assistant surveyor of the province of Louisiana, 1785-1805.

Abstract: Primarily financial and legal documents of Joseph Perot, a free man of color, and Louis Fort. Of note is a true copy of an act of manumission by Louis Fort for a woman (described as a mulatto) named Angélique (1819), and, a document for the sale of a mortgage and a 20-year-old enslaved man named Joe to Joseph Perot by Aimee Barborousse Pantaléon, widow of Isidore Pantaléon (1840).

Legal contracts include a land sale contract between Louis Fort and John Baptiste Buard, the last will and testament of Louis Fort (1823), and a land grant for land formally owned by Louis Fort by the widow of the late Jean Baptiste Buard to Marie Rosalie Perot, Pierre Edmond, and Louis Onesime (1840).

Financial documents include bills for dry goods, a promissory note by Joseph Perot for the cost of gun repair (1848), and a statement of account from Dupleix Brothers to Madeleine, a free woman of color (dated 1853-1855). Other members of the Perot family, Buard family, and the Pelagie family are also represented. All but five documents are in French.

Abstract: Text, date unknown, probably the 1930s. Bermuda Plantation. Description of Bermuda Plantation, formerly known as Oakland Plantation. The author claims it is an outstanding example of the oldest type of Louisiana Architecture. The land grant for the house was received from Spain in 1787. The house served eight generations of the Prudhomme family. Article contains notes and bibliography and is signed by author and project supervisor Velma Juneau.

Abstract: Text, December 22, 1820. On the 17th of March, 1795, the governor of Louisiana entered into a contract with the Marquis de Maison Rouge, of which this document is a copy. Declaration of the Marquis de Maison to bring in to the Louisiana provinces thirty families for the purpose of forming an establishment on the lands bordering upon the Washite (Ouachita). A list of the colonies conditions are listed as well, including cost for families and servants. On the 14th of July, in the same year, this contract was laid before the king of Spain, by whom, as attests by the following, it was duly approved. Contact signed with the king and Marquis of Maison Rouge for the establishment of the Washita.

Abstract: The conveyance, dated May 22, 1793, negotiates use of land in Natchez ceded to Andrés Gil, practitioner at the Natchez royal hospital. In the document, Gil addresses Manuel Gayoso de Lemos, District Governor of Natchez (West Florida), and states his plans to build a house on No. 2 of Square No. 2. Written in the left margin on the same date is Gayoso de Lemos' response, granting the concession under the condition that a house be built on it within one year. The district governor also states that Guillermo Dunbar will mark out the land.

On the third page, Dunbar certifies on June 2, 1793 in Natchez that he has measured No. 2 of Square 2 and marked its boundaries with cypress pickets and he gives the measurements.

On January 7, 1795, Gayoso de Lemos notes at the end of the document that Gil has met the conditions of the concession and, thereby, has full rights to the land in question. Charles Vidal's signature is barely visible below Gayoso de Lemos’.

Inside the document are three notes in English, one of which is scratched out.

William Johnson, a free man of color and barber of Natchez, Mississippi, later owned the lot that belonged to Andrés Gil. In Spanish.

Abstract: Armand Duplantier, Jr., St. James Parish, tells his cousin Antoine Frédérique Allard Duplantier, Voiron, France, that Améle Duplantier, returning to Louisiana, has brought the recipient's news. The addresser expresses sorrow upon learning about the addressee's wife's accident. He relates that his daughter Louise died the previous November 17 and describes her expiration. Duplantier addresses questions his cousin has about Spanish land grants mentioned in Armand, Sr.'s April 25, 1822, letter and the writer's own August 26, 1826, letter (which he mistakenly attributes to 1825) and offers reasons for his delay in responding. The addresser describes the roles of Mr. de Lassize (Mme. Avart's brother) and Mr. de Marigny (both men 'personally known by Louis-Philippe, your king') in rallying on behalf of 'all the old French families of Louisiana' in the land matter. He expresses frustration and pessimism over the United States government's handling of the property issue. He accuses the government of prejudice against Louisiana-French Creoles and cites two laws designed to populate the state with Anglos and diminish the prominence of Creoles. He relates how the discrimination has caused him to have to work hard all his life and come to the aid of others, rendering him far less affluent than persons such as Mme. de Castellino think him to be. In closing, the addresser refers to a package of insects sent to the addressee through Perret.

Abstract: Armand Duplantier, Jr., Paris, writes his aunt Euphrosine Tivollier Allard Duplantier, Vorion, France. He indicates that both addresser and addressee have not received all of the letters that they have sent each other, a problem that almost everyone in the family consistently voices. Duplantier states that he has heard of the recipient through his father and his brother Guy. The writer expresses his pleasure upon knowing that his female cousin will be marrying a Tivollier, the addressee's brother's son. Duplantier echoes his father's April 25, 1822, letter when speaking of problems that Louisianians are having with the United States' failure to recognize Spanish land grants, and he expresses the hope shared by his father that Congress will clear up the matter. The addresser indicates that Hippolyte Tivollier is the addressee's nephew and that he is no longer associated with 'P….' [Perrin?] but with Mayer in Baton Rouge. Duplantier reports that of his brothers, Fergus has been married for a long time but without children and that Guy has been married for six years to a relative. The writer goes on to say that Guy has a brickyard near New Orleans and four children. He speaks glowingly of his own wife and gives frank appraisals of his four children. He states that his older daughter, fifteen years and four months old, is named Célestine. He describes her appearance and qualities and relates that she is fluent in spoken and written French and English. He describes the appearance of his second daughter, Louise, as well, noting that she is thirteen years old and in Paris. He notes that his sons are six and three. Duplantier suggests sending mail through Henry in Le Havre and Fortin in New Orleans.

Abstract: The title of legislation was "Act enabling the claimants of lands within the the limits of the State of Missouri and Territory of Arkansas to institute proceedings to try the validity of their claims." Those who had legally received French or Spanish concessions prior to 1804 March 10 could file a petition with the District Court of Missouri to substantiate the claim. The law outlined procedures and requirements for receiving titles. [The heirs of Jean Antoine Bernard Dauterive based their claim to Vermilion Prairie on this Act and on a subsequent one passed by Congress 1844 June 17.]

Abstract: Hubert Bellanger claimed a tract of land of 663 acres on Bayou Terrebonne and presented proof that he had occupied the land prior to 1803. The Commissioners ruled that a claimant was not entitled to more than 640 acres and confirmed Bellanger's title only for that amount.

Abstract: Bienville and [Marc Antoine] Hubert made the following concessions of land to the former on 27 March 1719: a cattle pasture on the other side of New Orleans, facing the city on the west and the Point Saint-Antoine of M. Hubert on the east and extending in depth to the southern shore of the Lake; a tract situated above and on the boundaries of New Orleans, along the Mississippi up to the bend below the Chapitoulas. The Directors of the Company in Paris approved the grant on 6 February 1720.
