Abstract: William Willis was a colonel in the Louisiana Militia during the War of 1812 and later a Concordia Parish sheriff. His brother, John B. Willis, was an attorney of Port Gibson, Claiborne County, Mississippi. Letter from William Willis, Camp, addressed to his brother in Bayou Pirrie, concerning the purchase of "Negro cloth" and money matters. The letter mentions the purchase of "five good fellows" [possibly the purchase of slaves] for the price of fifteen hundred dollars.

Abstract: The notebook of the Johnson family contains notes on horse upkeep, teaching, and household and farming management dating from March 1848 to December 1866. The book was used by several members of the Johnson family. Notes on farming and horse upkeep were probably created by Bryon Johnson, who was a free man of color and barber. Notes on teaching were probably created by Byron's sister, Katherine (Kate) Johnson, who was a free woman of color and a primary school teacher in the Natchez Public School System. The notebook also contains some blank pages.

Abstract: The Johnson family ledger contains records of farming transactions with various business associates in Natchez, Mississippi between March 1858 and May 1859. The book was probably used by Josephine Johnson and Byron Johnson, free people of color and the children of William T. and Ann Battles Johnson. Many of the entries record the shoeing of horses. The book is organized by the name of business associate. The ledger also includes handwritten lyrics, religious-themed poetry, and a letter from Josephine Johnson to Octavia Miller, a free woman of color and Josephine's cousin.

Abstract: Capt. John W. McClure, USA, assistant quartermaster, New Orleans, issued these reports. The first 1 July 1862, lists income taxes withheld under the new federal law from salaries of forty-four military and civil officials in the service of the United States in occupied New Orleans, including General Thomas West Sherman. The second report, 5 September 1863, lists rebels whose property was confiscated by the United States. Included are such figures as John Slidell, Judah P. Benjamin, and General Daniel Twiggs. The largest individual confiscation was Dr. W. Newton Mercer's property, $292,700. The total value of property seized from more than a hundred New Orleanians was $3,262,368.92. Supervising the confiscation was Benjamin Flanders, a treasury agent in 1863, but eventually to be military governor of Louisiana and mayor of New Orleans.

Abstract: The notebook of Byron Johnson contains lists of expenses, several diary entries, handwriting practice, and calculations dating from October 1846 to August 1866. The lists of expenses primarily track money spent on horse upkeep, goods purchased for the Johnson children, and farm related expenses.

The book also contains several diary entries, which discuss the institutionalization of Byron's brother, William Johnson Jr., to an asylum in New Orleans on April 18, 1866; the illness and subsequent death of Mrs. Tharrers; and the death of Byron's mother, Ann Battles Johnson, on August 19, 1866.

The numbering of the notebook's pages is inconsistent. The notebook contains several missing and blank pages.

Abstract: Armand Allard Duplantier, Baton Rouge, tells his brother, Guy Allard Duplantier, about the capture of Mérieult's ship [Le Fame?]. The writer, who had cotton on the vessel, says he learned of the event through American newspapers and Mr. de l’Arbre and that Bird Savage in London and Mr. Porteau will look into the seizure. He also mentions James Cazenove's involvement on the part of Louis Tivollier in the affair. Duplantier speaks of purchasing 'Meyphrey' (which he spelled as 'Mayphrey' in his August 25, 1803, letter). He mentions changes due to occur from Louisiana's transfer to the United States, expresses impatience for new rule, and voices frustration over the effects that switches in government have had on the local economy. He states that Hippolyte Tivollier and Perrin are at his plantation and gives updates on their projects.

Abstract: Richard Steinhorst was born in Oklahoma and graduated with a degree in Petroleum Engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1937. He worked for Texas Company in Oklahoma, Illinois, and Kansas. Then he switched to British-American Oil Producing Company, working in Colorado for 2 years before ending up in Lafayette in 1957. Eventually he became an independent contractor in 1962. Steinhorst discusses changes in Lafayette over the years, and also his role in the oil industry.

Abstract: Gene Bankston grew up in Southeast Oklahoma. After serving in World War II as a B-17 gunner he studied petroleum engineering at the University of Oklahoma, earning his degree in 1949. He began working for Shell that same year and quickly rose through Shell's ranks. He worked towards economically evaluating prospects in order to maximize profits for the company. After working in New York in 1957, Shell assigned him to the Hague to better understand the "big picture" at the company. Between 1957 and 1963 he worked in various capacities for the company including division exploitation engineer for Southwest Louisiana and assistant to Shell's manager of exploitation in New York. He was the key liaison between development and E&P for Shell. He became manager of the economics department in 1964, and in 1965 he worked in London as head of the North American Division for Shell International Petroleum. In 1966 he became the Vice President of E&P for the Houston area. He served in that capacity for 6 years until becoming Production VP. He worked in that position until his retirement in 1980. Topics include the impact various economic models for offshore lease analysis and discussion of bright spots and recovery methods. Short discussion on reorganization and research.

Abstract: Ron Brooks first came to Houma as a pharmaceutical representative for Eli Lilly in 1967, but he didn't stay. He was transferred to Baton Rouge in 1970, then to New Orleans in 1973. In 1978 he returned to Houma to stay, working as a real estate broker. He is now president of Patterson Real Estate, a well established, full service real estate company.
