Abstract
In 1920 New Orleans artist William Woodward received a commission from the United Fruit Company to paint a 15-foot-diameter mural to cover the entrance rotunda for its new eleven-story million-dollar building at 321 St. Charles Street. The United Fruit Company, founded in 1899, traded in tropical fruits grown on Third World plantations and sold in the United States and Europe. The company was founded by Minor Cooper Keith (1848-1929), a U.S. railroad, fruit, and shipping magnate. Keith spearheaded the construction of a railroad from the Costa Rican capital city of San Jos to the Caribbean port of Limn in order to facilitate the exportation of coffee to Europe. Because the construction was so difficult and about 4,000 people died of tropical diseases during the construction (including three of Keith's brothers), the project became very costly and Keith's profits after the completion of the railroad were insufficient to cover his debt. As early as 1873 Keith was experimenting with the roots of bananas he had acquired from the French. He established large banana plantations, and shipped the bananas via his Tropical Trading and Transport Company. He began running a steamboat line from Limn to New Orleans, a trade that became extremely lucrative. His company merged with the Boston Fruit Company, becoming the United Fruit Company. The company flourished in the early and mid-20th century and controlled vast territories and transportation networks throughout the Caribbean coast of the West Indies, Columbia, and Equador. The resultant monopoly of the United Fruit Company and the nefarious multinational political shenanigans that developed in these areas gave rise to the term "banana republic," which was coined by American writer O. Henry (William Sydney Porter, 1862-1910). The Port of New Orleans, one of the world's largest port systems, provides proximity to the American Midwest and a 14,500-mile waterway system; consequently it became a major port of choice for the entry of bananas until the 1970s. The financial importance of the port is reflected in A. J. Liebling's observation in "The Earl of Louisiana," his book about Huey P. Long in which he wrote that New Orleans was not the southernmost part of the United States but the northernmost border of Central America. In his painting of the S.S. Atenas, William Woodward (1859-1939) included bananas, mangoes, and pineapples as major foodstuffs coming from the South American countries and entering the Port of New Orleans. The easel painting recently offered at Neal Auction Company, differs from the mural that he painted for the United Fruit Company's new building. The obvious activity focuses on the unloading of a cargo of fruit. The mural was a tondo painting, and Woodward modified the composition accordingly in this rectangular format, including the trees, the number and position of the figures; their activities, and the manner in which the vendors hold the various fruits. For emphasis, Woodward added a rowboat filled with the produce that reflected the business interests of the United Fruit Company. While he was painting the mural, the sixty-two year old Woodward fell from the scaffold. The full extent of his injuries is unclear, for Woodward blamed the fall for his confinement to a wheelchair. In fact, Woodward had undergone surgery for the removal of a tumor on the spine, an operation that was partially successful. Although the tumor was removed, Woodward was unable to stand erect. In 1922 he retired from teaching at Tulane University and relocated to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The painting underscores the hesitance of people during the early 20th-century to speak of cancer. The painting is important for another reason, for it depicts the S.S. Atenas during the productive years of trade with Central America and the Caribbean islands. The Atenas, an American steam merchant completed in 1909 by the Workman, Clark & Co. Ltd. of Belfast, was transferred to U.S. flag in 1914 and owned by the United Fruit Company. On 26 May 1942, the unescorted Atenas with eight officers, 46 men, eight armed guards and ten passengers, was about 175 miles south of the entrance to the Mississippi River when the crew spotted a periscope moving toward the vessel, changed course to allow two guns to be cleared, and fired four shots on the periscope. The U-boat disappeared and the Atenas proceeded on a southerly course in a zigzagging pattern. On 27 May, Hermann Rasch, commander of the U-106 opened fire on the Atenas from about 1500 meters in an effort to stop the zigzagging ship, but his deck gun malfunctioned. After an exchange of fire, seven shells had hit the port side of the Atenas and started two small fires, which were extinguished with little damage to the ship and without casualties. The crew of the Atenas plugged the holes in the hull and continued their voyage safely. As such, the painting bears a direct connection with "U-Boote im Golf von Mexiko 1942 - 1943," a map by Carl D. Vought held by The Collection. (1991.156) This 1986 facsimile map, based on historical data, highlights the extreme danger that German submarine warfare posed to ships entering or exiting the Mississippi River into the Gulf of Mexico. The German Kriegsmarine used a coded grid system to plot U-boat positions, designating the area of the Gulf south of New Orleans as DA90. During the years 1942 and 1943, perhaps no area of the sea was deadlier to merchant sailors than DA90; many tankers and freighters fell prey to the U-boats dispatched there. Submarines also prowled Louisiana's coasts during World War I, when at least one disabled German U-boat was captured and towed up the Mississippi River to New Orleans. This map demonstrates the proximity of World War II to the very doorstep of Louisiana. And the portrait of the S.S. Atenas, which was the 35th of 98 vessels documented by German U-boat commanders as being hit, serves to remind us of the resilience of those who preceded so many Americans who are still unaware of the activities in the Gulf of Mexico, for the United States maritime trade experienced hazardous journeys during the second World War.

More than 3,000 ocean-going ships, flying the flags of all maritime nations, clear from the port of New Orleans each year. Normally, the value of waterborne commerce at New Orleans is about $1,000,000,000 a year. Port and river improvements, costing nearly $200,000,000, make New Orleans one of the modern ports of the country. Port facilities at New Orleans include seven miles of steel transit sheds, one section of which is shown in this picture. The world's largest cotton warehouse and the country's most modern grain elevator are included in these facilities. Service by 90 steamship lines from New Orleans is more regular and extensive than from any other American port, except New York. Note the "docking" in New Orleans is alongside, instead of requiring tedious "wharfing" into slips as in other ports.
