Abstract
Chiefly petitions, subpoenas, public instruments of protest, and bills of exchange for legal cases against Auguste Metoyer, a free man of color, in the State of Louisiana between the years 1830-1846. The legal documents chronicle Auguste Metoyer's financial and legal difficulties stemming from debts owed, primarily to white planters and businessmen, during and following the economic depression of the late-1830s.

Cases against Metoyer include: Thomas H. Kiddu & Charles Head vs. Jesse Smith & Auguste Metoyer; Terence Chaler vs. Birtt & Metoyer; Sherbume & Campbell vs. Auguste Metoyer; Narcisse Prudhomme vs. Auguste Metoyer; Ambrose Secomte vs. Auguste Metoyer & François Gassion Metoyer; the Union Bank of Louisiana vs. Auguste Metoyer, Joseph Augustin Metoyer, and Joseph Metoyer; and William Porter vs. Auguste Metoyer & François Gassion Metoyer.

Of note is a personal letter to Auguste Metoyer from Nicolas Charles LeRoy, a school teacher from Versailles, France who once taught school in the Isle Brevelle community. In the letter, LeRoy discusses setting up a three-way meeting between themselves and J. B. Adelé and sends his regards to Auguste Metoyer, his wife, and his little girl.

Ten of the twelve items are written in French, with eight of these items containing text in both French and English.

Abstract
Legal and financial documents of William Johnson, Harriet Battles, and Ann Battles Johnson, free persons of color, include receipts of sale, invoices, insurance policies, and agreements for sale and renting of property between the years 1830-1839. Documents of note include: a license to remain in the state of Mississippi for Harriet Battles dated 1832; a marriage license dated April 20, 1835 for William Johnson and Ann Battles; an agreement of 1830 between Jacob Eiler, agent of Samuel M. Neill, and James Miller, a free man of color, concerning the lease of a building; and a document dated October 15, 1833 which details the terms of a lease between William Johnson and Samuel M. Neill for Johnson's renting and purchase of a building and its surrounding property.

Also represented are: insurance policies for William Johnson with the Natchez Insurance Company; a receipt dated 1834 for a certified claim by Harriet Battles against the estate of David Johnston; a promissory note of 1838 from Noah Barlow to William Johnson;a stock certificate of the Mississippi Railroad Company dated 1839; and various other receipts for goods, crops, farm animals, and clothing.

Abstract
A certified copy of the procès-verbal (proceeding) concerning the attempt by Joseph Maison, bailiff of the Superior Council of Louisiana, to seize the property of Villars Dubreuil in New Orleans. In accordance with the Superior Council's orders of August 23, 1766 and November 10th and May 2, 1767, Maison visited the Royal Street residence of Villars Dubreuil to seize the property. There he was met by an elderly free woman of color, who informed him that all belongings and enslaved persons had been removed from the house.

Subsequently, he went to the Villars residence on the other side of the Mississippi, one league from the city, where he was met by Villars Dubreuil and armed men. Villars denied having any dealings with de Villemont and demanded to see copies of documents he had allegedly signed. In French.
