Caption by Maude Reid: "The Eureka Brass Band - 1890's - on Ryan street in front of the old Walker house - a famous hotel in the early days of Lake Charles. It stood next door to Knapp's Drug Store and was managed by a former sea captain who had sailed the seven seas in his four-masted schooner, coming to Lake Charles with the steel rails for the Southern Pacific Railroad in the 70's, returning at last to make his home here. He has entertained Governor S.D. McEnery, Catherine Cole - writer for the New Orleans Time-Democrat, actors of early days who came to perform in the old Williams Opera House - and there were many distinguished names among them - Mrs. Modjeska; Joseph Jefferson; James O'Neill; Fay Templeton; Mrs. Fiske - many others. The young men in the band were leading citizens of that time, that is, the younger branch thereof. Their picture and names appear elsewhere in the scrapbook."

Written on photo: Black Buster Beaver of Beaumont, Texas, blowing away notes that put high spirits in the delegates. His piano accompanist, Mary Brooks, helped him by "tickling" soft notes and singing the choruses very loudly.
