Library Letter Heads were furnished by these soldiers for periodic correspondence which was mailed all over the U.S. This is a one room library, and as you see, it has been practically taken over by the soldiers. They are there all day and evening.

Abstract
Copy of The Ladie's Birthday Almanac, published in 1897 by the Chatanooga Medicine Company. The almanac belonged to the Badin family of Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, who were descendents of free people of color. The book contains advertisements for women's health products sold by the Chatanooga Medicine Company and monthly astrological weather forecasts for the year 1897. The almanac was selected for digitization from Box 5a, Folder 22 of the Norbert Badin Papers.

Primarily notarized documents regarding the sales of land and enslaved persons signed in 1824 by Jean Pierre Marie Dubois, notary public of Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. Documents relating to free people of color include an appointment of a proxy for Rose Metoyer; a land sale conveying the property of Augustin Metoyer to François Metoyer; an exchange of properties by Jean Baptiste Augustin Metoyer and Louis Metoyer; and a slave bill of sale by Maxille Metoyer to his father, Augustin Metoyer. All but two documents in French.

Primarily legal documents notarized in the year 1825 by Jean Pierre Marie Dubois, justice of the peace of Natchitoches Parish, including land sales, slave bills of sale, emancipation records, appointments of proxies, successions, and estate inventories. Papers relating to free people of color include a court testimony by Joseph Metoyer regarding the discovery of a stray horse in Cloutierville, and two documents relating to the emancipation of Louis Monet (also spelled Monette) by Marie Louise Lecomte (Widow Porter). The bulk of the documents are in French.

The account book of the Badin family includes records of personal and business transactions for business conducted in Natchitoches Parish, La and surrounding areas for the year 1916. The entries typically provide the name of the business associate, purpose of the transaction, and the amount paid. The book is divided into sections labeled with the letters of the alphabet, but transactions are recorded consecutively. The book also includes a record of transactions with various members of the Metoyer and Dupré families, who were descendents of free people of color in the Cane River colony of Natchitoches Parish, La.

Notarized documents including land sales, slave bills of sale, court records, affidavits, estate and succession inventories, and statements of debt that were certified in 1830 by Charles Derance, notary public of Natchitoches Parish. A land sale conveys the property of Leman Chaler to Jean Baptiste Metoyer. A court proceeding and a statement of debts concern the seizure of property belonging to Athanase Lassize by Nicola Gracia. This seizure occurred because Athanase, a free man of color, had fled Natchitoches Parish without repaying his debts to Gracia. Over half of the documents are in French.

Materials consist primarily of receipts, notes, and letters belonging to Atala Chelette and Emanuel Chelette. The documents are undated and were likely created between the years 1874 and 1919. Included are receipts from Anchor Supply Co. in New Orleans, La.; a receipt from the Convent of Divine Providence in Natchitoches, La.; a fragment of a letter from N.
