Newspaper photographs and captions: "Lake Charles' long-time dream of a new bridge across the Calcasieu river is nearer realization as the G.A. Williams, one of the largest and most powerful hydraulic dredges in the South begins work on the first contract. The huge dredge is removing muck from a strip of lake bottom 1,000 yards wide on which will be built the east approach to the new $5,000,000 bridge. The dredge is eating its way about 500 feet south of and parallel to the Southern Pacific railway toward a point on the east shore of the lake between Church and Belden streets." "Dredging starts for river bridge - Capt. H.H. Coleman (above left) of Natchez, Miss., skipper of the dredgeboat G.A. McWilliams, is visited by Elmer Shutts, member of the state highway commission, as the McWilliams begins work on the first contract of the new Calcasieu river bridge project. The big Diesel - turbines that make the McWilliams the most powerful hydraulic dredge in the South is shown at top right. The McWillisams boasts of a 3,500 horsepower turbine that turns its cutter. The cutter is shown at the left as it was lifted from the lake bottom for inspection. The structure supporting the cutter and its drive-shaft is called the ladder. Underneath the ladder is the large pipe which sucks the muck after it is loosened by the cutter. The muck is pumped through discharge lines into a swamp north of the Kansas City Southern railway."
