Abstract: Abstract Students will collaborate with their peers to explore primary documents written by American and British eyewitnesses to the events surrounding the Battle of New Orleans. Documents include British attempts to persuade New Orleans residents and Jean Laffite?s Baratarians to aid the British cause. The letters also explain the reason for the American victory. Students will search the LOUISiana Digital Library for information regarding British and American leaders associated with the Battle of New Orleans. Student products include investigative news articles and a Battle of New Orleans Who?s Who slide show/flash card exhibit.

Abstract: Copy of The Ladie's Birthday Almanac, published in 1897 by the Chatanooga Medicine Company. The almanac belonged to the Badin family of Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, who were descendents of free people of color. The book contains advertisements for women's health products sold by the Chatanooga Medicine Company and monthly astrological weather forecasts for the year 1897. The almanac was selected for digitization from Box 5a, Folder 22 of the Norbert Badin Papers.

Abstract: This letter is one from a collection of four letters from Lieutenant Colonel Edward Nicholls, commander of the British forces in the Floridas, and Captain William H. Percy, Senior Officer of the Gulf of Mexico. They were signed and certified as true copies by Governor William C. C. Claiborne in the same year. Nicholls and Percy attempted to persuade the citizens of New Orleans, the Kentuckians residing in Louisiana, and Jean Lafitte to cooperate with the British in effecting the fall of the city. The British offered the citizens of New Orleans relief from "the American usurpation," and the Kentuckians free navigation of the Mississippi River and the right to deposit in New Orleans. The Baratarians were offered protection of their property, a full pardon, and land in the British colonies. In return, they were to give their vessels to the British and end harassment of the Spanish.

Abstract: Captain Percy informs Laffite that he has dispatched Capt. Lockyer to Barataria under the pretence of an inquiry into British merchantmen recently seized by the Baratarians. Lockyer, he points out, has authorization to demand "instant restitution" and, in the event of refusal, to destroy the Baratarian fleet. Percy then outlines the rewards to Lafitte for assisting Great Britain by placing his vessels under his (Percy's) command. The manuscript copy is certified as true by Gov. Claibourne.

Abstract: Caleb Miller, an American slave trader, was on board vessels transporting slaves to Cuba and America. Edward Spalding, a merchant from Bristol, Rhode Island, was involved in the slave-trade in Cuba and acted as agent for Jacob Babbit and the DeWolf family of Matanzas, Cuba. The letter to Edward Spalding, comments on the high rate of mortality among slaves on board vessels from Africa and suggests measures which could reduce the number of deaths.

Abstract: Letter to the representatives of the people of West Florida from Charles Dehault Delassus, commandant of the Spanish Fort at Baton Rouge, 1807-1810, in response to a letter he received from the representatives. Delassus expresses his pleasure at their loyalty to the Spanish flag and desire to retain him as their leader. He also reminds them of their duty to provide him with information about those inciting the people and mentions rumors in the district that "the flag of independence" had been raised at musters of the militia.

Abstract: Letter to Don Carlos Delassus 9i. e. Charles Dehault), Baton Rouge, from John Mills who might have written the letter while attending a convention to discuss forming the Republic of West Florida. The letter, from St. Johns Plains, espresses satisfaction over the communications received from the convention. John Mills was a delegate for the Feliciana District to the Convention. Charles Dehault Delassus, Baton Rouge, served in the Spanish army, civil and military commandant of New Madrid, Lt. Gov. of Upper Louisiana and St. Louis, and Commandant of Baton Rouge.

Abstract: The Bradford family settled in East Feliciana Parish and owned large tracts of land that extended into the plains area of Northern East Baton Rouge Parish, also known as Buhler's Plains. The map of four tracts of land, was granted by the Spanish government to David Bradford, esq., deceas'd [i. e. deceased], for himself and three of his sons, situated on a branch of Redwood Creek near the Plains called Buhler's. The survey refers to an 1802 Spanish land patent of Abelard Bradford, son of David Bradford. The tract of land was surveyed by Christopher Bollino.

Abstract: Docket book of Magistrate Edward Turner of Natchez, Mississippi Territory. The volume contains the docket for cases Numbers 1-879. Each entry gives the names of litigants, a summary of the case, and the final settlement or sentence. A number of the cases involved, as defendants, enslaved persons or free people of color who were brought before the magistrate on various charges. Also includes two separate alphabetical indices, one of plaintiffs and the other of defendants.
