Description
In 1965, U.S. Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach filed suit against the Original Knights of the Ku Klux Klan for a permanent injunction barring the Klan from interfering with the civil rights of Black citizens through a campaign of assaults, intimidation and harassment. 35 OKKKK members are named as defendants and the suit details numerous incidents of violent intimidation. According to historian Lance Hill, "the action marked the first time that the Justice Department had purposefully used a federal suit to destroy the Klan in the civil rights movement era.”
