Abstract
Correspondence of Ann Battles Johnson and William Johnson, both free persons of color of Natchez, Mississippi, primarily relates family news and family business matters between the Johnsons and extended family members and friends during the Antebellum period.

Correspondents include: James Miller, Adelia Miller, Lavinia Miller McCrary, Byron Johnson, Phoebe Smith, John Chavoir, William Mosby, Ann Battles Johnson, William Johnson, and Washington Stern.

Letters from James Miller to his brother-in-law, William Johnson, concern barbering and their respective shops and family news. Members of the Miller family write from their home in New Orleans to discuss family news. Included is an 1848 funeral notice written in French for the burial of James Miller's son, James Miller Jr. in New Orleans. Also included is a letter from Ann Battles Johnson's sister, Phoebe Smith, discussing themes of marriage, children, health, and religion (dated 1853). An 1833 letter from Lawrence W. Minor of New Orleans to Ann Battles Johnson describes her son and William Johnson Jr.'s progress with his schooling and good behavior.

Of note is an 1849 letter from William Mosby of Jefferson County, Indiana to William Johnson describing Baylor Winn, the man who William Johnson accused of shooting him, as a ""...black-hearted wretch and those in co. with him no better."" One item in French.

Abstract
Legal and financial documents of William Johnson, Harriet Battles, and Ann Battles Johnson, free persons of color, include receipts of sale, invoices, insurance policies, and agreements for sale and renting of property between the years 1830-1839. Documents of note include: a license to remain in the state of Mississippi for Harriet Battles dated 1832; a marriage license dated April 20, 1835 for William Johnson and Ann Battles; an agreement of 1830 between Jacob Eiler, agent of Samuel M. Neill, and James Miller, a free man of color, concerning the lease of a building; and a document dated October 15, 1833 which details the terms of a lease between William Johnson and Samuel M. Neill for Johnson's renting and purchase of a building and its surrounding property.

Also represented are: insurance policies for William Johnson with the Natchez Insurance Company; a receipt dated 1834 for a certified claim by Harriet Battles against the estate of David Johnston; a promissory note of 1838 from Noah Barlow to William Johnson;a stock certificate of the Mississippi Railroad Company dated 1839; and various other receipts for goods, crops, farm animals, and clothing.

Abstract
The folder contains legal documents created during the years 1822-1829, which relate to the emancipation of Harriet Battles and Ann Battles Johnson by Gabriel Tichenor.

The first document, dated May 16, 1822, is a notice and acknowledgment of Tichenor's intention to emancipate Harriet Battles. The document was drafted in the Parish of Concordia, Louisiana and signed by Gabriel Tichenor, Judge Edward Broughton, and Deputy Sheriff A. Stanbrough.

The second document is a deed of manumission, dated May 1826, for Harriet Battles and her young daughter Ann Battles. The document is drafted and signed in Ohio by Gabriel Tichenor, Tichenor's lawyer Nathanial Wright, Judge George P. Torrence of Hamilton County, Ohio, Isaac G. Burnet, mayor of Cincinnati, and the court clerk. In essence, this deed, re-emancipated Harriet and legally manumitted her daughter Ann through the Court of Ohio.

The third document of Gabriel Tichenor (now claiming citizenship in Natchez, Mississippi) notifies the State of Mississippi that he has given his Cincinnati lawyer, Nathanial Wright, full power of attorney and informs the court that Wright has emancipated Harriet and Ann Battles. Through this document, Nathanial Wright also offers testimony that Tichenor has manumitted both Harriet and Ann Battles, through his attorney. The mayor of Cincinnati, Issac Burnet, also offers testimony of Nathanial Wright's right to manumit Harriet and Ann Battles on Tichenor's behalf.

The fourth document, dated December 21, 1827, is a receipt for the sale of two enslaved persons--"a negro girl named Julia aged about 21 years, and a child Laura aged one year"--from James Ferguson to Jenny Bush, Harriet's mother. Julia and Laura were later purchased and emancipated by Harriet Battles in 1840 (folder 17 of the William T. Johnson and Family Papers contains the act of emancipation), and it is likely this receipt belonged to Harriet. The receipt is attached to newsprint from a page of classified advertisements in a New Orleans newspaper.

The fifth item of the folder, dated June 11, 1829, is a handwritten receipt for Harriet Battles for the purchase of flour and lard.

Abstract
The folder contains miscellaneous, and mostly undated, printed materials belonging to the Johnson family, free people of color and their descendents. Dated materials range from 1862 to 1934; undated materials range from approximately 1830 to 1950. The materials include advertisements for medicines and household goods, clippings, physicians' business cards, a blank marriage license from the 1830s, and loose pages of published materials.

Amongst these items is a pamphlet issued by the National Anti-Monopoly League entitled Corruption of our Elections, Legislation and Courts and a 1934 typewritten eulogy by G. David Houston for Dr. Henry Lewis Bailey, an African American physician, civil rights leader, and mentor to Dr. William R. Johnson.

The bulk of the materials probably belonged to Anna Johnson and her nephew, Dr. William R. Johnson. Early materials may have belonged to William Johnson, Ann Battles Johnson, Harriet Battles, or Byron Johnson.

Abstract
Notarized documents including land sales, slave bills of sale, court records, affidavits, estate and succession inventories, and statements of debt that were certified in 1830 by Charles Derance, notary public of Natchitoches Parish. A land sale conveys the property of Leman Chaler to Jean Baptiste Metoyer. A court proceeding and a statement of debts concern the seizure of property belonging to Athanase Lassize by Nicola Gracia. This seizure occurred because Athanase, a free man of color, had fled Natchitoches Parish without repaying his debts to Gracia. Over half of the documents are in French.

Abstract
The daybook of William T. Johnson, a free man of color, contains a record of his daily personal and business expenses in Natchez, Mississippi between May 1830 and June 1842. The book chiefly contains records of money spent on food, clothing, musical supplies, household supplies, marketing, and supplies for William Johnson's barbershop. The first entry of the daybook (page 10) includes a record, dated October 12, 1830, of William Johnson's payment to James Miller for an unexpired lease of his shop and the adjoining buildings for $240.00. The first nine pages of the daybook are blank, and several blank pages can be found in the main portion of the book.

Abstract
The cash book of William T. Johnson, a free man of color, contains a record of accounts for household and business goods purchased between October 1830 and October 1837. Most of these accounts are for purchases in Natchez, Mississippi, though some are for goods purchased in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The cash book chiefly documents purchases for food items, home repair equipment, furniture, and other items relating to the management of the Johnson family home. The book also records transactions for theater outings, musical instrument supplies, wood, newspaper purchases, marketing, and goods for William Johnson's barbershops.

Some calculations and sketches are also included in the cash book.

Notarized documents including land sales, slave bills of sale, an emancipation record, affidavits, estate and succession inventories, and marriage records certified in 1829 by Charles Derance, notary public of Natchitoches Parish. A bill of sale conveys the enslaved person belonging to Joseph Thomson to Auguste Metoyer, a free man of color (April 11). An affidavit records the testimony of Jean Baptiste Paliere Rachal, a free man of color, in a case regarding the theft of corn (July 15). An emancipation record manumits Jean Baptiste Siriac, the 13 year old enslaved boy of Marie Louise Marguerite LeComte, a free woman of color (August 7). Over half of the documents are in French.

Abstract
Chiefly petitions, subpoenas, public instruments of protest, and bills of exchange for legal cases against Auguste Metoyer, a free man of color, in the State of Louisiana between the years 1830-1846. The legal documents chronicle Auguste Metoyer's financial and legal difficulties stemming from debts owed, primarily to white planters and businessmen, during and following the economic depression of the late-1830s.

Cases against Metoyer include: Thomas H. Kiddu & Charles Head vs. Jesse Smith & Auguste Metoyer; Terence Chaler vs. Birtt & Metoyer; Sherbume & Campbell vs. Auguste Metoyer; Narcisse Prudhomme vs. Auguste Metoyer; Ambrose Secomte vs. Auguste Metoyer & François Gassion Metoyer; the Union Bank of Louisiana vs. Auguste Metoyer, Joseph Augustin Metoyer, and Joseph Metoyer; and William Porter vs. Auguste Metoyer & François Gassion Metoyer.

Of note is a personal letter to Auguste Metoyer from Nicolas Charles LeRoy, a school teacher from Versailles, France who once taught school in the Isle Brevelle community. In the letter, LeRoy discusses setting up a three-way meeting between themselves and J. B. Adelé and sends his regards to Auguste Metoyer, his wife, and his little girl.

Ten of the twelve items are written in French, with eight of these items containing text in both French and English.

The business was owned by Emanuel Dupré and Jean Baptiste Dominique Metoyer, both free men of color of creole heritage. An entry of 1873 records a mortgage due to Oscar Dubreuil. The back portion of the book includes song lyrics, addresses, and a list of family ages and deaths written in English. The account book is written in French.

About the Louisiana Digital Library (LDL)

The Louisiana Digital Library (LDL) is the front door to Louisiana's digital cultural heritage. Members include public libraries, academic libraries, museums, and archives from arcross the state.

Currently, there are 25 participating institutions in the LDL. Each institution contributes the digital items and the descriptive text for their collections.
