Abstract
Dispute over payment of a promissory note for 364 dollars and 4 bits and a 1/2 written by John Baptiste Frette to John Francis Merieult on April 5, 1796. The note was then transferred to C.E. Ewald and then to the House of Sexton, Maitland & Co. Gaspard Debuys and Remy were local lawyers representing several New York merchants from that company in the suit. File contains petition, answer and legal documents from New York. Petition written by Eligius Fromentin. Answer written by P. Derbigny and filed Nov. 24, 1806. Document giving power of attorney for Nicholas Olive, Henry Cheriot, and Willam Sexton to Debuys, Remy and James Freret was witnessed by Anthony Stafford and P. Van Shaack. Affidavit of New York notary public John Wilkes dated Jan. 12, 1796.

Abstract
Dispute between New York merchants Daniel and Williem Thorn and Henry O'Hara, a New Orleans merchant, for payment of $1,947.66 for goods, wares and merchandise on May 1, 1805. File contains petition, summons, affidavit, judgement, petition for appeal, fieri facias and account balance. Petition written by E. Bradish. Summons and fieri facias written by Thomas S. Kennedy. Affidavit of Bradish states that he was in posession of two notes written by O'Hara for $356 and $197, neither of which was endorsed to his knowledge and were either lost or mislaid. The account balance liste debts from Jan. 22, 1803-April 1, 1805. On Aug. 3, 1805, Judge James Workman ruled for the plaintiff in the amount of their demand plus court costs. Petition for appeal written by R.R. Keene. Fieri facias served Oct. 21, 1805 and noted on verso of fieri facias that a bridle and saddle were seized and sold for $25 for payment of the debt.

Dispute between the merchant Richard Clague and the lawyer Edward Livingston over the sum of $900. File contains petition and answer. petition, written by A.R. Ellery, claimed that the New York merchant Charles Whitney directed Livingston to pay Snell, Stagg & Company $900 on March 2, 1803. Then on June 19, 1806, Snell, Stagg & Company endorsed the order to Clague. Answer written by Jones and filed March 23, 1807.

Abstract
Chiefly petitions, subpoenas, public instruments of protest, and bills of exchange for legal cases against Auguste Metoyer, a free man of color, in the State of Louisiana between the years 1830-1846. The legal documents chronicle Auguste Metoyer's financial and legal difficulties stemming from debts owed, primarily to white planters and businessmen, during and following the economic depression of the late-1830s.

Cases against Metoyer include: Thomas H. Kiddu & Charles Head vs. Jesse Smith & Auguste Metoyer; Terence Chaler vs. Birtt & Metoyer; Sherbume & Campbell vs. Auguste Metoyer; Narcisse Prudhomme vs. Auguste Metoyer; Ambrose Secomte vs. Auguste Metoyer & François Gassion Metoyer; the Union Bank of Louisiana vs. Auguste Metoyer, Joseph Augustin Metoyer, and Joseph Metoyer; and William Porter vs. Auguste Metoyer & François Gassion Metoyer.

Of note is a personal letter to Auguste Metoyer from Nicolas Charles LeRoy, a school teacher from Versailles, France who once taught school in the Isle Brevelle community. In the letter, LeRoy discusses setting up a three-way meeting between themselves and J. B. Adelé and sends his regards to Auguste Metoyer, his wife, and his little girl.

Ten of the twelve items are written in French, with eight of these items containing text in both French and English.

Turner knowing he was diseased. Affidavit of Turner sworn before B. Cenas, a justice of the peace. Summons, written by Thomas S. Kennedy, was served on Aug. 8, 1805 and bail taken. Abstract
File contains petition, judgement and covenant. Petition asked for approval of a "condordat" made among the creditors of I.G. Tomatis and notarized by Stephen de Quinones. Jean Nicholas le Boucher and Jacob Hart, the syndics of the creditors, acted as the petitioners. The covenant was agreed upon by Etienne Dubon, Clark & Rogers, John Poultney, William Walraven, Le Boucher and Hart. It lists the debts of Tomatis including a shipment of wood from Philadelphia, Pa. to New Orleans, La. petition and covenant written by L.A. Dupuy. On April 18, 1807, Judge L. Moreau Lislet confirmed the covenant and ordered it recorded in the clerk of court's office.

Dispute over payment of a promissory note for $403.52 written by New York merchant Robert MacCulloch to [Farpian?] & Crichton on April 18, 1805. James Forbes was also a merchant from New York. James Johnston and Andrew Burk possessed property belonging to MacCulloch. File contains petition, attachment. Attachment written by Thomas S. Kennedy and delivered July 26, 1805. The total debt listed in the attachment is $999.60.

Abstract
William Machette was a ship owner of Boston, Massachusetts. This letter book was kept by William Machette, containing handwritten copies of letters to business associates in various parts of the world, including several letters to Judah Touro of New Orleans, Louisiana, and letters referring to Machette's dealings with Touro. Other letters to New Orlean's agents contain references to the Embargo and attendant difficulties.

Brown and Ives, of Providence, Rhode Island, commenting on the war situation in New England, Pensacola, Fla., Mobile, Ala. and New Orleans, La. The letter mentions British troops landing in Pensacola; Jackson [i. e. Andrew Jackson] making peace with the Creeks in Mobile; a growing militia force and a force from Kentucky; and the storage of the businessmen's cotton.
