Abstract
Letters from a variety of persons to John McDonogh reference the purchase of enslaved persons, a fugitive slave, tenant issues, infrastructure (roads, levees, and bridges), monetary loans, plantation management, and an educational project. In one letter, P. Winfree, a planter, requests a loan to finance the switch from cotton to sugarcane cultivation and describes his group of thirty-two enslaved persons. Also present is a survey map produced by the State of Louisiana outlining the lands of James Williams, John Burr, Jean Lejaune, Paul Deslandes.

Undated letters written by Andrew Durnford, a free person of color, to John McDonogh regarding personal matters and the affairs of his sugar plantation. The letters refer to the birth of his daughter, Rosema (1844), news from his son, Thomas, at college (graduated 1846), offers by various persons to purchase his property, and the death of his slave, Barba (1836).

Abstract
Letters written by Andrew Durnford, a free person of color, to John McDonogh regarding the affairs of his sugar plantation. The letters concern shipments of sugar that Durnford sent to McDonogh to place in the care of a broker, the status of Durnford's crops, and McDonogh's failing health. In a letter dated 1 November 1847, Durnford informs McDonogh that his slave, Jackson, has run away. Some documents are in French.
