Abstract: Model form for census, submitted by Matthew Flannery to the City Council of New Orleans. The model was the form that Flannery proposed to use in compiling data for a census of New Orleans. He planned three categories of inhabitants--whites, free people of color, and enslaved persons--further dividing each of these into males over sixteen years and under sixteen, and females over sixteen and under sixteen.

Abstract: Census of New Orleans, 1805, submitted by Matthew Flannery to the City Council of New Orleans. The data sheets, compiled by census-taker Matthew Flannery, are arranged by streets, according to the model form he submitted to the City Council on May 11. The total number of inhabitants in the city was 8,475 - 3,551 whites; 1,566 free persons of color; 3,105 enslaved persons; and 253 other free people. In French.

He represented the United States along with fellow commissioner James Wilkinson. He came to New Orleans at President Thomas Jefferson's request to represent the United States for the transfer of the Louisiana Territory from France to the U.S.

Abstract: Armand Allard Duplantier, Baton Rouge, sends his brother, Guy Allard Duplantier, a letter for which the continuation is missing. He outlines the recipient's assistance in Mr. Bernard's sale of property in Brittany, which also involves Bernard's relative Mr. du Haut-Cilly and a Mr. 'Mesgen' in St. Brieuc, France. Duplantier refers to getting wine from Otard in Bordeaux and again brings up the Nantes ship detained in Jamaica. He speaks in greater depth about problems with corsairs. The addresser refers to a letter from Tivollier in France announcing the death of the latter's father and relates that Hippolyte Tivollier in Louisiana was very affected by the news. Duplantier discusses placing his son Armand with Tivollier for continued education and training in the latter's profession and mentions his other sons in France, Fergus and Guy, reiterating his concern for the former. The writer again expresses frustration over the war's preventing his return to France.

Abstract: Armand Allard Duplantier acknowledges to his brother, Guy Allard Duplantier, Voiron, France, that he has received letters care of Mr. Gachet. He refers to cotton and Campeche wood being sent to France as well as Lefebvre's and Poignand's [Poignaud's?] involvement with the shipment. The writer comments again on the problems that corsairs are causing during the war. Duplantier says that he has received a letter from Porteau, and he mentions sending funds to Claude Trénonay's heirs. The addresser discusses his three oldest sons' European education and asserts that his newest son resembles the eldest. The writer expresses his desire to hunt again with his brother and to have the 'penaillon' as pastor at Chirens, France. He mentions Hippolyte Tivollier, Perrin, and Gourrier [Gournier? Gourvier?] at the end, saying that the Louisiana winter weather agrees with the first.

Abstract: Armand Allard Duplantier, New Orleans, addresses a duplicate letter to this brother, Guy Allard Duplantier, Voiron, France. He says that he has written the recipient through Mr. 'Tureau' [Tuveau?], a young man returning to Marseille who was also conveying a letter for 'Louis.' Duplantier expresses surprise over hearing about problems that Lefebvre has caused in handing funds over to the addressee, and he wonders if Thebaud has been negligent in this regard. He refers to a ship from Nantes’ being taken to Jamaica, and, in relation to the affair, he discusses disappointments concerning a trusted young man who had been associated with 'Faurie' [Fauvie?] and who is also involved with 'Louis' and business in Marseille. In relation to shipments, Duplantier expresses fears concerning 'Algerians.' The addresser affirms that he is happy over his brother's undertakings with Mr. Samadet. He says that he has heard from Bird Savage in London in reference to Cazenove, and he conveys Gourrier's [Gournier's? Gourvier's?] regards.

Abstract: Receipts and a bill of sale record financial transactions between Jean Baptiste Meullion, a free person of color, and the merchants Louaillier Brothers, Bougaud, and M. Vavant. Also included is a promissory note given by Martin Donato to J. Loulie, as well as a bill addressed to Mademoiselle Belanier (Belarie or Bellazaire?) from the Church of Opelousas. Documents are in French except for one receipt.

Abstract: Bust length watercolor on ivory miniature of David Hunt. Sitter wears a white ruffled shirt secured by a white cravat, underneath a solid-white buttoned waistcoat. Overtop is a dark blue coat with metal (probably brass) buttons outside of the lapel, typical of the early-nineteenth century. Sitter's position is angled, but he looks directly at the viewer. Hunt's whispy hair falls on the proper-left side of his forehead. Background is mottled blue, gray and white. Blue is concentrated at the back of the sitter's head, to differentiate and highlight the body. Likeness is enclosed in a copper case with a glass front. Strands of beading are soldered to the edges, hiding the seam. A looped hanger is soldered to the top of the case, and overhangs the back. Rear of case reveals glass window for hair work, not present. Complex woven textile (possibly silk) can be seen.

Abstract: Rectangular top table with a single drawer on square-tapered inlaid legs. Table frame tenoned into the upper block of the legs and secured with pegs. Two board cherry top pegged into the top of the the leg blocks and table frame. Drawer runners tenoned into the interior of skirt at back and jointed into the front interior of skirt and nailed. Square drawer stop nailed at back. Single drawer with cherry front and tulip poplar sides, back and bottom. Front is half-blind dovetailed to the sides; backboard is simply dovetailed to the sides. Drawer bottom is inset and nailed into the sides and back. A single nail driven from underneath might have attached the bottom to the front of the drawer, now missing. Brass pull at front of drawer, probably a replacement. Unidentified light wood inlay around the skirt on all four sides, on drawer front, and on the front and exterior side of each tapered leg. On legs, inlay arches at top and terminates in a cuff near the bottom.

Abstract: Dispute between the City of New Orleans and Lazarus Latil over the rent of the collection of taxes of the public market. Latil leased this for the sum of $10,300 for one year beginning Jan. 23, 1805. The city's petition, written by P. Derbigny, sought payment for two month's rent at the rate of $858.333 per month. File also contains judgement, summons, answer and fieri facias. Answer written by James Cesar Pailette. On Oct. 21, 1805, Judge James Workman ruled for the plaintiff in the amount of $1716.666 plus court costs. Summons and fieri facias written by Thomas S. Kennedy. Fieri facias dated Oct. 30, 1805 and noted on verso that no property was found.
