Abstract: Fair copy letter book contains 218 items of proclamations and official and some personal correspondence of William C. C. Claiborne, governor of the Territory of Mississippi in 1801 who was appointed to receive Louisiana from France in 1803 and who served as governor of the Territory of Orleans, 1803-1812, and of the State of Louisiana, 1812-1816. Letters reflect his relationship with administrative superiors, describe his efforts to maintain peaceful relations with the Spanish authorities and the Native Americans, particularly the Caddo and the Choctaw Indians, discuss problems occasioned by the importation of blacks and slave insurrections, the establishment of a legislative council and a judicial system, the revival of the Louisiana bank, Spanish land grants and surveys in the Natchez District, Catholic disputes in the district of Saint Bernard, irregularities in the postal service, shipments of supplies to Fort Stoddard and Fort Stephens, his relationship with municipal authorities in New Orleans and commanding officers of military posts at Natchitoches, Ouachita, Concordia, Pointe Coupee, Plaquemine, and Saint John the Baptist. Letters by Claiborne are chiefly to James Madison, Secretary of State; Albert Gallatin, Secretary of the Treasury; President Thomas Jefferson; Marquis de Casa Calvo; Sheriff Louis Kerr; James Brown; James Petit, Mayor of New Orleans; J. B. Provost; and to commandants and other military officers of the various districts of the territory of Orleans. Letters received by Claiborne include many by the above figures, including Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Louis Kerr, J. B. Prevost, Albert Gallatin, and the Marquis de Casa Calvo among others. A few personal letters of Claiborne and his family are included.

Abstract: This copy of an ordinance was issued by the Marquis de Casa Calvo and signed by Francisco Collell and John Joseph Cruzat, captains of the Regiment Infantry of Louisiana. The document requests permission for leave for several regiment officials at a military post following the handing over of that province to the French. The document includes how many officials wish to take leave, when the regiment would embark, the amount of cargo to be taken, and a request for ten thousand pesos. The Marquis de Casa Calvo was a Spanish brigadier general who served as ad interim governor of Spanish Louisiana, Sept. 18, 1799-July 14, 1801.
