Student collaborative productions include an atlas of U. S. expansion through the 1870s, a research journal, a timeline of important events related to the frontier, a concept map of frontier economic activities, newspaper articles for Harper's Weekly to be used to compile a class edition of Harper's Weekly. Note: this is not an introduction to U. S. expansion. Part I is a review of territorial expansion; Part II is an exploration into why groups moved west during the post-Civil War period and the history of those groups in the development of the west.

Abstract: Lesson Abstract: On December 16, 1803 Pierre-Clément de Laussat, Napoleon's Prefect in Louisiana, issued a proclamation that upheld the French Code Noir in the Louisiana Territory. Although Laussat was to hold the position of Prefect for only twenty-one days, this proclamation held significance for all Louisianans. Under French law, the Code Noir defined the political, social and economic lives of African Americans. Abstract: Lesson Abstract: Newspapers of the 1802-1804 period document events related to the history of the Louisiana Territory and speculate concerning the future political status of the territory's residents. By recording both domestic and international views, these articles contain valuable clues with which we may understand the events leading up to one of the most remarkable land deals in history. Students analyze nineteenth century newspaper articles to uncover important facts related to the Louisiana Purchase. As students research, they complete a timeline of Louisiana events from the sixteenth century European explorations through the early nineteenth century. Students also complete a biographical dictionary (identification list) of significant individuals related to the Louisiana Purchase.
