Abstract: Primarily receipts, promissory notes, and other financial documents of Baptiste Meullion. Receipts are for Martin Duralde’s drafting of Baptiste Meullion’s marriage contract with Marie Célèste Suzanne Donato (Bello), donations to the Saint Landry Catholic Church (Opelousas, La.), taxes, freight on luxury goods, newspaper postage, medical care for an enslaved person, legal services, expenses and disbursements from his handling of the succession of Marie-Pouponne Taillefer, expenses from processing his 1830 sugar crop, and for payment on a mortgage to purchase the enslaved man Marcel from Widow Stelly, the wife of Robin (1820, see #5). Another receipt (1830) also relates to his purchase of the enslaved man Marcel, but this time the seller is named as the estate of Marie Thérèse "Berthelotte," wife of Dr. Robin. In many of these transactions, Jean Miramond is acting on behalf of Meullion, perhaps as his agent or partner, and the unit of currency continues to be denoted as "piastres"and not dollars in most exchanges, even after Louisiana became a territory of the United States in 1803. Promissory notes are with Valérien Allain, J. Miramond, and Messrs. Smith and Brown. Also present is a receipt from Curé E. Rousselon’s for payment received from Antoine Donat Meuillon for the burial of Baptiste Meullion, who died February 17, 1840, financial documents for the Widow of François Meullion, and a receipt for Widow Fédrich Blassy accounts with Bellazaire Meullion. Documents in French and English.

Abstract: Text, date unknown, circa 1930s. Petroleum Room, Charleston Hotels, Lake Charles. Room dedicated in honor of H.T. McClain, by his widow, in the Charleston Hotel in Lake Charles, Louisiana. McClain was an honerary member of the South Louisiana Oil Scouts and therefore the room is to be known as the "Petroleum Room." Murals in the room were painted by J.W. Zelm of Baton Rouge. They depict scenes of the Port Barre Oil field. McClain also built the Charleston Hotel and the Weber Building of Lake Charles.

Abstract: Text, circa 1930s. Margaret Statue at Camp and Prytania Streets. History and description of the Margaret Statue in New Orleans, Louisiana. The statue commemorates Margaret Gaffney Haughery a wealthy and successful widow in New Orleans who left her savings to the orphanages of that city. The statue was dedicated in July of 1884, the ceremony is described. The statue was designed by Alexander Doyle, is of Carrara marble and was executed in Italy.
